Troubleshooting

How to fix DigiD not working

DigiD is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach digid.nl over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check Logius storingen

Open the official status page, Logius storingen: http://www.logius.nl/actueel/storingen/. If it names DigiD, wait and try the login later; changing your phone or browser will not fix that case.

  2. Set the phone clock

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. On a Pixel or stock Android phone, go to Settings > System > Date & time and turn on Set time automatically; on Samsung, use Settings > General management > Date and time > Automatic date and time, then open the app again.

  3. Restart the DigiD app

On Android, go to Settings > Apps > DigiD > Force stop, then tap Open. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or double click the Home button, pause in the app switcher, swipe the app up, and open it again.

  4. Reinstall the app

On iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > DigiD, tap Delete App, then install it again from the App Store. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > DigiD > Uninstall, then install it again from Google Play; after that, activate the app before you try to log in.

While DigiD is down: what to use instead

  • Username and SMS If the app is the part failing and you already set up SMS control, try logging in with your username, password, and text message code.
  • Website instead of app If the mobile app hangs or will not open, use the service website in a browser and choose another login method that you already have active.
  • Contact the organisation For urgent tax, benefit, municipality, or health matters, call the organisation or use its desk appointment route and explain that online login is unavailable.
  • Logius storingen Check Logius storingen to see whether there is a known outage before you reset passwords or change app settings.
Same time

Problems at the same time as DigiD

Since 3 November, all 6 of DigiD's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when DigiD goes down

DigiD is the Dutch digital identity service used to sign in to government and public-sector services such as tax, benefit, municipal and healthcare portals. When it has trouble, you may be blocked from filing forms, reading messages, or approving a login in the app.

A failure often shows up first at the login handoff, where a government site sends you to the service and the page stalls or returns to the original portal. App approval can also hang, while SMS verification may arrive late or fail before you can finish signing in. Some outages affect only one login method or one connected service, so another public site may still work. Clear regional patterns are less common, because the service is national, but reports can still feel uneven when one provider path is having the problem.

Questions

DigiD FAQ

Is DigiD down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether reports for DigiD are above their usual level, counted in 15 minute windows over the last 24 hours. This page bases that status only on reports sent to a public outage reporting service, and it does not monitor the service or collect reports itself. Check the official Logius storingen page as well. To rule out your side, switch between Wi Fi and mobile data, restart the app or browser, clear the browser session, and try the same login from another device.

Why can't I log in with the DigiD app?

Start with the basics: update the app, check your phone time, switch networks, and turn off any VPN if the login keeps looping. If the app opens but the approval does not reach the website, close both the browser and the app before trying again. A problem after you changed phones often means you need to activate the app on the new device again.

Why am I not receiving the SMS code?

SMS checks use the mobile number registered to your account, so a changed number can stop the code before it reaches you. Check signal and restart the phone; after that, look for blocked senders and wait before requesting a new code. If no text arrives while other messages do, the issue may sit with the mobile network or the service.

Why does a website send me back to the login screen after I approve in the app?

The app may approve the login while the browser session on the government or care website has expired. Clear old tabs, open a fresh tab, allow cookies, and stay in the same browser mode during the attempt. If the loop happens on one organisation's site but another site accepts the login, the receiving site may be at fault.

Why does the QR code not scan during DigiD app login?

Give the app camera permission and keep the QR code visible until the login finishes. If the scanner keeps missing it, brighten the screen, clean the lens, move the phone back, and refresh the login page to get a new code. On a work laptop, browser restrictions or remote desktop software can also break the scan flow.

How we track DigiD

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for DigiD, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for DigiD, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. This is separate from DigiD's official status page: user reports tend to show a problem early, while the official page confirms the cause. If the two disagree, check both.
