Troubleshooting

How to fix Capital One not working

When Capital One itself is having trouble, these steps won't bring it back, but they will rule out anything on your side:

Your browser tries to reach capitalone.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart the Capital One app

Close it from the app switcher, then open it again. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and flick the Capital One card upward; on Android, open Recents and swipe the app away. This clears a stuck splash screen or a blank view without touching your account.

  2. Swap Wi-Fi for cellular

Turn Wi-Fi off in Control Center or Quick Settings, then load the app over cellular. If the sign-in screen or account list stalls on one network, switch back to Wi-Fi and try a mobile browser. A dead connection on one path is more common than a full outage.

  3. Update the Capital One app

Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll to Available Updates, and install any pending Capital One update; on Android, open Google Play, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps and device, then tap Updates available. Reopen the app after the update finishes.

  4. Clear cache or reinstall

On Android, open Settings, tap Apps, select Capital One, then Storage and Clear cache. If the app still loops or crashes, uninstall it and install it again from Google Play; on iPhone, delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store. You will need your username and password to sign back in.

While Capital One is down: what to use instead

  • Capital One website Sign in through a browser to check balances or pay a card bill when the app will not load.
  • Card in hand Pay with the physical card at checkout if the app stalls and you need to complete a purchase.
  • Phone line Call the number on the back of your card for account help when chat or the app is down.
  • A second bank Use a card or account from another bank for a payment if the outage blocks your usual one.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Capital One

Since 27 October, all 8 of Capital One's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Capital One goes down

Capital One is a bank and credit card issuer with a mobile app and online account tools that people use for checking, savings, card payments, and loans. An outage interrupts sign-in, balances, transfers, and card controls.

Sign-in tends to fail first. The account dashboard can spin or load blank, and you may see a generic error instead of balances or recent charges. Transfers and bill pay can fail after login. Mobile check deposit and card purchases can still work because they run on separate systems, and problems can be regional or limited to the app, so the same service may work for someone else while yours does not.

Questions

Capital One FAQ

Is Capital One down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Capital One are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. To see if the problem is only on your side, switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data and try another browser or device. If the app and the website both fail the same way, your connection is not the cause.

Why does the Capital One app keep sending me back to the login screen?

A stale saved sign-in or a phone that keeps switching between Wi-Fi and cellular can cause that loop. Force close the app and clear its cache if your phone allows it. Then sign in again; if the website works on the same network, the problem is local to the app.

Why did my Capital One card payment show as pending after I paid it?

A payment can sit as pending while the bank and card issuer post it, especially if you paid from an external bank account or on a weekend. Check the payment date and the account it came from. Keep the confirmation from the app; if the card balance has not changed after the posted date, call the number on the back of your card.

Why can't I lock my Capital One card in the app?

Card lock needs the app to reach your account service, so a login that works for balances but fails on card controls points to an app or network problem. Try cellular data and update the app. If that does not help, sign out and back in, then try the lock again.

Why does Capital One show my account balance as unavailable?

An unavailable balance can mean the app cannot refresh your account data after a password change, a locked account, a new device, or a weak connection. Sign in on the website and check for a security message or a verify prompt. Reconnect on a stable network and try again; if both app and website show a blank balance, call support.

How we track Capital One

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Capital One, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Capital One, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Capital One doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
