How to fix Telegram not working

Telegram is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach telegram.org over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check the Connecting banner

    Watch the top bar for Connecting or Updating. If you see it stuck there while websites load, toggle Airplane mode and check Settings > Data and Storage > Network Usage to see if data moves at all.

  2. Clear cache in Storage Usage

    Open Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage. Tap Clear Cache now. You free gigabytes without deleting chats because the app re-downloads media from the cloud when you open old chats and channels.

  3. Turn off Proxy in Data and Storage

    If your messages stall on one Wi-Fi but send on mobile data, open Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy and turn it off. Turn off VPN too.

  4. Reinstall and sign in again

    Delete the app from your phone, then install it again from the App Store or Google Play and sign in with your phone number. Save Secret Chats first. Cloud chats return after the SMS code, but Secret Chats never sync.

  • Telegram Desktop Your chats sync to the desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux, so it helps when the fault is your phone or its connection.

Fix
Restart the Telegram Desktop app or try accessing Telegram Web to bypass local client issues. You can also check your Windows Defender Firewall settings to ensure Telegram is allowed to access the network.

What happens when Telegram goes down

Telegram is a messaging app for chats, channels, groups, and calls on phones and computers. People use it for everyday talk and work crews, so an outage can stop messages from sending, media from loading, calls from connecting, and login codes from arriving.

Message delivery and media uploads tend to break first: texts sit with a clock icon or a single check, and photos or videos stall at a progress circle. Channel posts and group chats may load older content but refuse to refresh, while voice and video calls fail to connect or drop soon after they start. Login codes often never arrive on a new device, which locks you out until the service recovers. Problems are often regional or partial, so the app can work on one network or platform while failing on another.

Is Telegram down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Telegram are above their usual level. The site counts reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. To tell if the trouble is only on your side, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then open Telegram Web or Desktop on another device and send a test message. If that works, your phone or local network is the likely cause.

Why does Telegram keep saying Connecting... and not send my messages?
That label means the app has not reached a server yet. Check if other apps load on the same Wi-Fi, then switch to mobile data or a different network. If Telegram Web works but the phone app stays on Connecting..., clear the app cache or reinstall it. A VPN or proxy setting inside the app can also block the connection.

Why can I not log in to Telegram with my phone number?
A missing login code is often a carrier or country code problem. Check that the number matches your country code and that SMS is not blocked. If you are signed in on another device, Telegram can send the code inside the app instead. A 'Too many attempts' warning means you should wait longer before requesting another code.

Why do my Telegram notifications arrive late on Android?
Android battery savers often put the app to sleep, so messages only arrive when you open it. Open Settings and set Telegram's battery mode to Unrestricted. Turn off data saver for the app, and check that notifications are allowed. If a task killer or custom ROM manages background apps, allow it there too.

Why did my Telegram secret chats disappear after I reinstalled the app?
Secret chats live only on the device where you started them. Reinstalling the app or clearing its data removes those messages, and Telegram cannot restore them from the cloud. Regular cloud chats and groups should return after you log back in. If cloud chats are missing too, check that you signed in with the same phone number.
