How to fix World of Warcraft not working

World of Warcraft is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

  1. Check the official status page

    Open the official World of Warcraft status page for your region before you change settings. The character select screen shows whether your server is up or down. If Blizzard's service is down, nothing on your PC will fix it. Start there.

  2. Restart the game and launcher

    Close World of Warcraft and the launcher completely, then open Task Manager or Activity Monitor and end any leftover game processes. Start the launcher again. A stale process can block the client even when your internet works fine.

  3. Disable addons and reset the interface

    Rename the Interface and WTF folders inside the _retail_ folder to Interface.old and WTF.old, then delete the Cache folder next to them and restart the game. That resets your UI. If it works, move addons back one at a time to find the bad one.

  4. Run Scan and Repair, then flush DNS

    In the launcher, open the World of Warcraft options menu and choose Scan and Repair. Let it finish. If the problem stays, open Command Prompt as administrator and run ipconfig /flushdns, then restart your PC.

What happens when World of Warcraft goes down

World of Warcraft is an online role-playing game built around questing and grouped play. Players log in to a character and join others for dungeons or PvP, so an outage cuts off login, character loading, chat, and the group activity you had planned.

Login breaks first. You enter your password, pass the authenticator, and then hit a queue or a disconnect before the character list appears. If the list loads but the world does not, a stuck loading screen or a 'world server is down' message can leave you staring at a black screen while chat and mail fail to send. Instanced content often breaks even when open-world questing works, so dungeon and raid groups stall at the portal, and the auction house or group finder may return nothing, though these problems tend to be partial or regional, with one server group or data center failing while other players in the same region stay online.

A single character stuck on loading, while a different character logs in, usually points to a local cache or a character-specific issue.

Why does the game say 'World server is down' when I try to log in?
That message comes from the game client when it cannot reach the world server that holds your character's zone. If your launcher works and other characters on different servers load, the problem is likely on that one server. Wait a few minutes, then try again. If the message repeats across all characters, check the official status page listed above. A full server can also block a new login even when the service is otherwise up.

Why did my game time or subscription not show up after I paid?
Payment processing can take a short while, and the game may still lock you out until the account page updates. Check your account page for a pending or failed charge, then look for a receipt in your email. If the payment cleared but the game still says your subscription is inactive, do not buy the same game time again while the first charge is pending. A double charge is harder to fix than a delayed one.

Why does World of Warcraft disconnect me during raids or battlegrounds?
