What happens when Archive of Our Own goes down

Archive of Our Own is a nonprofit fanfiction archive where you post chapters and track kudos and comments across old and new fandoms every day. You lose evening reading.

Search gives out first when load spikes, so you see spinning results or empty tag pages while basic story text still opens for a bit. You cannot post drafts. You hit login loops and kudos buttons that hang because sessions drop before pages do. Outages hit everyone at once although cached chapters sometimes stay readable while new requests time out across devices.

Why do I see an error page when I open a work link?
The author may have set the work to registered users only, so you need to log in before the page will load. If you are already logged in, the work could be a draft or the author may have deleted it. Reload once. If the error stays, check the help centre for account and privacy settings.

Why can't I comment on a work?
Authors can set comments to registered users only, or they can turn comments off. If you see no comment box, log in first and reload the page. When the box still does not appear, the author has closed comments. Your comment may also fail to post if your session times out, so log in again before retrying.

Does Archive of Our Own have an official mobile app?
No official app exists for phones or tablets; you read and post through a mobile browser. If an app store listing asks for your password, it is not from the service, so close it. Add the site to your home screen if you want quicker access.

Why is Archive of Our Own asking for payment or donations?
