How to fix Snapchat not working

Snapchat is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

  1. Force stop Snapchat

    Open the app switcher, swipe Snapchat away, then launch it again. On Android you can also open Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Force stop, which clears a stuck camera or chat screen without signing you out.

  2. Switch Wi-Fi to mobile data

    Turn Wi-Fi off from Control Center on iPhone or Quick Settings on Android, then send a snap over cellular. If the snap goes through, your Wi-Fi is the problem; move closer to the router or restart it. Turn Wi-Fi back on once the app loads.

  3. Update Snapchat

    Open the app's page in the App Store or Google Play and tap Update. If no update appears, check your phone's free storage, since a stalled install can leave the camera or chat list broken.

  4. Log out of Snapchat

    Open your profile, tap the gear icon, scroll to Log Out, then sign back in with your username and password. If you use two-factor authentication, keep your authenticator or phone nearby. A stale session can leave snaps stuck on Sending while the rest of the app opens.

What happens when Snapchat goes down

Snapchat is a camera-first messaging app for Snaps, Chat, Stories and Snap Map, and friends, families, creators and small teams use it all day. An outage interrupts a quick photo or a group chat.

During an outage, you may see a Snap sit on Sending, Chat messages stay on Delivered, the camera open to a black preview, and a Lens never load. Stories and Snap Map tend to fail once sending and loading already fail, so a video call drops or refuses to connect. Trouble is often partial, because one phone on Wi-Fi can send while another on mobile data cannot, and reports can cluster by city or carrier while the rest of the app works; the page counts those reports in 15-minute windows. It does not ping the app.

Is Snapchat down right now?

Why is my Snapchat camera black?
A black preview usually means another app grabbed the camera or the permission got dropped after a system update. Check that camera access is still allowed in your phone settings, close anything else using the camera, then restart the phone. When the preview stays black but the rest of the app loads fine, the fault sits on your device rather than the service.

My Snaps are stuck on "Sending". What's going on?
Snaps wait in the queue when the upload cannot reach the server, and a weak signal or a nearly full phone will do it. Try a short video on mobile data with the app freshly opened; if that goes through, the original was too big or your Wi-Fi dropped mid-upload. Every snap stalling at once, on any network, points at the service, so check the report level at the top of this page before you assume your phone is at fault.

Why hasn't my Snapchat verification code arrived?
Codes go to the phone number or email tied to the account, so a number you changed months ago will send them nowhere useful. Carrier spam filters and short-code blocks swallow texts, and asking for a new code too quickly can invalidate the one already sent. Wait a couple of minutes, request a single code, and use the email route if the text never lands. A wave of login complaints on the status page means the send is failing on their end.

Why does Snapchat work on mobile data but not on Wi-Fi?
Plenty of home networks block or throttle the connections the app needs, and a VPN or a captive portal login screen can break it outright. Forget the network, rejoin it, and switch off any VPN to test. If chats and Snaps flow on cellular and die on Wi-Fi, the router or your provider is the problem, not the app.
