Troubleshooting

How to fix Gmail not working

Gmail is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach gmail.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Reload Gmail and open a private window
Press Ctrl+R or Command+R to reload the tab. Then use Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on Mac to open a private window and sign in. If it loads there, an extension or saved cookie is blocking the normal window.
Check the official status page
Open the Google Workspace status dashboard and look for Gmail. If it lists an outage, wait for Google to fix it. If Gmail is not listed, the fault sits with your account or browser.
Sign out of Gmail and clear cookies
Click your profile picture and sign out, then sign back in. If the app still hangs, open your browser settings and delete cookies and site data for Google. Restart the browser before you try again.
Reset the Gmail app
On Android, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Gmail, then Storage and cache, and tap Clear cache. On iPhone, open Settings, tap General, tap iPhone Storage, tap Gmail, and delete the app. Reinstall it from the App Store if the problem continues.

While Gmail is down: what to use instead

Switch between web and app When only the phone app fails to load or sync, the web version in a browser often still opens your inbox, and the reverse can work too.
Offline mail in Chrome If you turned on offline mail in Gmail settings before the outage, Chrome still shows your recent messages and keeps new replies in the outbox until the service reconnects.
Microsoft Outlook A free Outlook account gets an urgent message out quickly, though you should tell the recipient why it comes from a different address.
Text or phone call For a moved meeting or a file someone is waiting on, a text or call reaches the person without relying on email.

Gmail on Windows

Fix: Clear your browser's cache and cookies, or try opening Gmail in an Incognito window to rule out extension conflicts. Ensure your web browser and Windows system are fully updated.

Fix: Force stop the Gmail app, clear its cache and data in your device settings, and check the Google Play Store for updates. Ensure that account sync is enabled for Gmail in your Google account settings.

Is Gmail down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping or probe anything, so the official status page is the place for Google's own view. To tell if the problem is only on your side, open the service on another network and try a different browser or device; if those fail, the issue likely sits with Google.

Why do I get 'Couldn't sign you in' when I enter my Gmail password?

That message usually means the password or an account security check failed. If you use 2-Step Verification, confirm the code from your phone or a backup code, then clear the browser cache and retry. A wrong system clock can also break sign-in on some devices, so set the time to automatic.

Why do my Gmail attachments fail to upload or send?

Large files and unstable connections are the usual causes. The web page often stalls before it shows a progress bar, while the mobile app may close or reset the draft. Try a smaller file and switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way; if the app still fails, send from the browser instead.

Why are my Gmail emails going to Spam instead of the inbox?

Filters or blocked addresses can push a message out of the inbox. Check Settings, then Filters and Blocked Addresses for a rule that matches the sender, and mark a missed message as 'Not spam' so the service learns. If the sender runs a mailing list, ask them to check their domain records.

Why does Gmail say my storage is full when I deleted emails?

Deleting messages only frees space after you empty Trash, and items in Spam still count until they clear. Photos and Drive files on the same account share that quota, and WhatsApp backups can also count. Check the storage page in your account settings to see what is taking up space.
