Ping test

Measure how fast your connection answers: ping, jitter and lost pings, timed by your browser. Test one server for a steady reading, or ping 34 servers on six continents at once to see how far your connection reaches.

What is a good ping?

Ping is the time a small message takes to reach a server and come back, in milliseconds. The lower it is, the faster games, calls and websites react. These are the usual ranges:

Under 20 msExcellent

Feels instant. Typical for fibre or cable to a nearby server.

20 to 50 msGood

Fine for online games, video calls and everything else.

50 to 100 msFair

Noticeable in fast games; calls still work.

Over 100 msPoor

Games lag and calls talk over each other.

Distance sets the floor: light in fibre needs about 1 ms for every 100 km there and back, so a server on another continent can't answer in 20 ms however good your line is.

How this test works

Your browser sends small HTTPS requests and times how long each answer takes. The first request opens the connection and isn't counted, so the timed pings measure the round trip rather than connection setup.

The servers aren't ours. "Nearest Cloudflare data centre" is the Cloudflare location that delivers this site to you; it answers by itself, without contacting our server. The other 33 are the public health-check addresses Amazon Web Services runs in each of its regions, which answer instantly and stand in well-known places.

One-server tests send 40 pings one after another and report the median, which isn't thrown off by a single slow ping, plus the minimum, average and maximum, jitter and lost pings. The world test reports the fastest of four pings per server, the value closest to the network's real delay. Expect a few milliseconds more than the ping command shows.

Ping test questions

What is a good ping?

Under 20 ms feels instant and is typical for fibre or cable close to the server. Up to 50 ms is fine for online games and video calls. Between 50 and 100 ms you start to notice a delay in fast games, and above 100 ms calls and games feel sluggish.

What is jitter?

Jitter is how much your ping changes from one ping to the next. This test reports the average difference between consecutive pings. Calls and games need steady timing, so 30 ms with 2 ms of jitter feels better than 20 ms with 40 ms of jitter.

Why is my ping higher here than with the ping command?

A browser can't send the ICMP packets the ping command uses, so this test times small HTTPS requests over a connection that is already open. That adds a few milliseconds of browser and server time. The command also usually pings a different server, which changes the distance.

Why is my ping so high?

The usual causes are Wi-Fi instead of a cable, distance to the server, someone else downloading or streaming on the same line, a busy or old router, or a VPN that sends your traffic through another country. Mobile and satellite connections also add delay.

How can I lower my ping?

Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi, pause downloads, cloud backups and streams on other devices, turn off your VPN, restart the router, and choose a game or app server in your own region. If every server is slow at all times of day, contact your internet provider with your results.

What does "lost" mean?

A ping counts as lost when no answer arrives within 3 seconds. Any loss on a wired connection points to a problem on the line or with your router; occasional loss on Wi-Fi or mobile is common.

Is it the service or my connection?

If pings to every server are fast and steady but one app or website still fails, the problem is most likely on the service's side: look it up in our list of services to see whether other people are reporting it. If pings are slow, jumpy or lost everywhere, start with your own connection. Browse all services.
