Troubleshooting

How to fix Telstra not working

Telstra is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach telstra.com.au over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Toggle Telstra mobile data

Open Settings and toggle Mobile Data off and back on after a few seconds. Do the same with Airplane Mode because that forces the phone to reconnect to the network; if the screen still shows No Service or SOS, move on.

  2. Re-seat the Telstra SIM

Power the phone off. Take out the SIM tray and reseat the card so the cut corner lines up with the tray notch, then turn the phone back on and watch for the carrier name; if the signal stays missing, the SIM or the line needs attention.

  3. Restart the Telstra modem

Unplug the power lead from the back of the modem for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the modem to finish starting, then test a website on a wired device or Wi-Fi.

  4. Reset Telstra network settings

On iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This wipes saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, so use it after the simpler phone steps fail.

While Telstra is down: what to use instead

  • Wi-Fi calling Turn on Wi-Fi calling when the mobile signal drops but your home broadband still works; a supported handset can route calls over the internet.
  • Second SIM Keep a SIM from another carrier in an old phone if you need to make urgent calls while the mobile network is out.
  • Messaging app Send a message through WhatsApp or Signal when SMS lags and you have a working Wi-Fi connection.
  • Web account Use the My Telstra web account in a browser if the app stalls and you need to check a bill or service.

Problems at the same time as Telstra

Since 28 October, all 7 of Telstra's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Telstra goes down

Telstra is an Australian telecom provider that sells mobile and broadband to households and businesses. An outage interrupts calls and internet access; that can stop a payment, a work call, a delivery update or a family check-in midstream.

Mobile data often fails first: your phone shows bars, but pages stall and apps time out. Calls fail to connect, and home broadband can drop out. The app or account pages may fail to load. Outages are often partial: one suburb, one service, one device or one connection type can break while another connection works, so a working line does not rule out a regional fault.

Questions

Telstra FAQ

Is Telstra down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in short windows over the last day. To see if the problem is only on your side, try another device on the same connection and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data; then restart the phone and the router. If the other network works, the fault is likely your connection or device, not the service.

Why does my Telstra mobile data stop working while calls still go through?

Calls and data can fail separately. Check that mobile data is on and look at the signal bar: if it shows SOS only or No service, move to another spot before you blame the phone. If the phone works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data, the fault is likely the mobile data setting or the local cell, not your home connection.

My Telstra app won't load or keeps signing me out. What should I check?

Close the app fully and try signing in on Wi-Fi, then on mobile data, because a blocked network can make the login fail. If it keeps signing you out, clear the app cache on Android or reinstall it on iPhone; a saved password that no longer works points to an account issue, so reset it in a browser.

Telstra home broadband keeps dropping out. How do I narrow it down?

Start with the modem lights. Check whether the drop hits every device at once, and note if the modem loses its DSL or WAN light; a light that changes on every drop points to the line or modem, while one device failing alone points to that device. Run a wired test from a laptop to the modem and compare it with Wi-Fi; if the wired link is stable, move the router away from walls and interference, and contact support with the times of the drops if the wired link also fails.

Why does My Telstra say a payment failed when my card is fine?

A failed payment can come from an expired card or a bank block on recurring charges. Check the card details in the app, then call your bank to clear any hold on the charge; if it still fails, use another payment method in the app and keep the receipt.

How we track Telstra

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Telstra, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Telstra, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Telstra doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
