Troubleshooting

How to fix NBN (National Broadband Network) not working

NBN (National Broadband Network) is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach nbnco.com.au over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check the NBN box lights

Look at the lights on the NBN connection box: the power light should be on, and the status light should be steady. If your box has an optical light and it is red, that points to a fibre fault, so call your provider; if every light is dark, check the power cable and wall socket.

  2. Power-cycle the NBN box and router

Turn off the router and the NBN connection box at the wall socket, wait 30 seconds, then power the connection box first and the router after its status light settles. That clears the router and connection box state without touching your settings.

  3. Test with an Ethernet cable

Plug a laptop into a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable, and turn off the laptop's Wi-Fi so the test uses the cable. Run ping 8.8.8.8 in Command Prompt on Windows or Terminal on macOS; if that works, the NBN line is up and the fault is with Wi-Fi, so check the router's wireless settings and move closer to the router.

  4. Call your provider with the light details

Tell your provider what the NBN box lights show and whether a wired test failed, because they can run line checks on the access network and book a technician if needed. Have your address and account details ready; do not unplug the box while they test.

While NBN (National Broadband Network) is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot Use a phone hotspot for quick email and page loads when cellular signal is strong.
  • Guest Wi-Fi Find guest Wi-Fi at a public library or cafe for basic browsing and messages if you can get to one and the network is open.
  • Mobile broadband router A data SIM in a mobile broadband router keeps a few devices online through a longer outage.
  • Provider support line Call your provider's support line from a mobile when the router shows no connection and you need an outage check.

Problems at the same time as NBN (National Broadband Network)

Since 28 October, all 6 of NBN (National Broadband Network)'s spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when NBN (National Broadband Network) goes down

NBN (National Broadband Network) is Australia's wholesale broadband network, and homes, schools, hospitals and businesses rely on retail providers that use it. An outage cuts your internet access for work calls, streaming, payments and emergency updates.

The status at the top of each page shows whether problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; the site does not test the connection itself or check from other locations. Internet access drops first. Your router that had a connection loses its internet light while wired and Wi-Fi devices both fall offline, and work calls freeze, streaming stalls, card payments fail and smart home devices drop offline; a landline phone that runs over the NBN can drop out as well. Trouble is often regional or partial: one suburb or a group of streets can lose service while other areas stay online, and some providers may show more problem reports than others.

Questions

NBN (National Broadband Network) FAQ

Is NBN (National Broadband Network) down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. To tell if the problem is only on your side, check the power and link lights on your modem or NBN connection box and test another device on the same Wi-Fi against a mobile data connection. If only your home connection fails, restart your router and contact your provider.

Why does my NBN connection box show a red optical light?

A red optical light on the fibre connection box usually means the box has lost the light signal from the street fibre. Check that the fibre patch lead is seated and that the box has power, then call your retail provider because a line fault needs their test.

Why does my NBN connection drop only at night?

A repeat drop at the same hours often points to local interference or a modem that overheats; it can also be a line fault that gets worse under load. Keep a note of the times and test with an Ethernet cable before you ask your provider to check the line.

Can I pay my NBN bill through NBN Co?

No. NBN Co sells wholesale access, so your bill comes from the retail provider you chose; pay that account through its app or website. If your service is suspended for non-payment, your provider can restore it after you settle the balance.

Why does my NBN router show no internet after a power outage?

The router may come up before the connection box has synced, so wait a few minutes and check the link light on both boxes. If the light stays off, unplug both units for a minute and power the connection box first, then the router; call your provider if the fault remains.

How we track NBN (National Broadband Network)

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for NBN (National Broadband Network), counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for NBN (National Broadband Network), so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. NBN (National Broadband Network) doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
