How to fix Discord not working

Discord is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach discord.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Check the official status page
Open the official status page. If Discord has posted an incident there, wait for it to clear; no incident listed means the issue is on your end.
Reload the app
Reload the window with Ctrl+R on desktop, or close the app from the app switcher and open it again on mobile. A stale session can leave messages stuck on sending, or voice stuck on RTC Connecting.
Switch your network
Turn off any VPN and try a different connection, such as your phone's hotspot. If voice is the problem, open User Settings > Voice & Video and run the mic test; change the input and output devices there because the app may have picked the wrong ones.
Reinstall the desktop app
Uninstall it from your system settings, then install it again. On Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Discord > Uninstall. On macOS, open Finder > Applications and drag Discord to the Trash; download the installer again from the source you used before.

While Discord is down: what to use instead

Discord in a web browser If the desktop app hangs on the update screen or keeps looping on the connecting message, open the web version in Chrome or Firefox, since it skips the local client and its cache.
The mobile app on cellular data Switching your phone off Wi-Fi tells you fast whether your home network is the problem.
Steam voice chat If your group already plays on Steam, you can start a voice call straight from the friends list and keep a match or raid night going until your server comes back.
A Signal or WhatsApp backup group Keep a small group there with your core members so you can still tell people where to meet when the whole service is out.

Fix Discord on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone

Discord on Windows

Fix: Close Discord completely via the system tray or Task Manager, then relaunch it. If issues persist, clear the Discord AppData cache or reinstall the application.
Check: Try opening the Discord web client in a browser to see if the service loads. You can also check for connection error codes within the Windows desktop app.

What happens when Discord goes down

Discord runs group chat and calls. Gaming crews, study servers, friend groups, and workplaces rely on it, so an outage interrupts the messages and calls you need; the status here counts problem reports from people in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours to show whether they are above their usual level, and it does not ping or probe the service.

Voice calls fail first. You tap a voice channel and sit on 'RTC Connecting' or 'No Route', while text channels keep loading for some people and not others. Messages hang on sending. Server lists may not refresh, notifications arrive late, the app can show a blank screen, and invites may not open because it cannot reach its servers; problems are often partial or regional, so your desktop app may fail while mobile still works, and one area may struggle while another stays fine.

Is Discord down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not ping or monitor the service itself, and it never checks from multiple locations, so treat that status as a signal from other people, not a live test. If the official status page is linked above, check it for a confirmed outage. To see if the problem is only on your side, open the web app in a browser and try the mobile app on cellular data instead of Wi-Fi; if both work, ask someone on a different network to send a message or join a voice channel.

Why does my message fail to send and show a retry button?

That usually means the message did not reach the server, so the app keeps it in the channel until you retry. Check your connection first, then try sending a short text message without an attachment; large files or many rapid messages can fail while text goes through. A failure in one server or channel may come from its permissions or temporary capacity. When it happens everywhere, compare with the web app on another network before blaming your account.

Why does Discord voice chat get stuck on RTC Connecting or No Route?

Those labels mean the app is trying to build a voice connection and cannot reach a usable route to the voice server. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then restart the app so it drops the stale connection. If you use a VPN, turn it off for a test; corporate or school networks often block the ports voice needs. A router reboot can help when every device in the same house shows the same voice error.

Why won't the Discord app load on my phone but the browser version works?

That split points to the installed app or the device rather than your account, because the browser is reaching the service over the same connection. Clear the app cache on Android, or delete and reinstall the app on iOS, then sign in again. Check that the app has permission to use mobile data, and confirm your phone can load other sites over that connection. If the browser version also fails on mobile data, the issue is likely your carrier or local network.

Why did my Nitro payment fail or my subscription not activate?

Payment failures often come from a bank decline or a mismatch in billing details. Discord usually keeps the subscription inactive until the payment clears, so check your billing page for a failed payment and update the card if needed. If the charge shows on your statement but Nitro is still missing, wait a few minutes and refresh the app before contacting support through the help centre. Do not open a second subscription as a fix; that can create a duplicate charge.
