How to fix Wikipedia not working

Wikipedia is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach wikipedia.org over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Test Wikipedia in a private window

    Press Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome or Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox to open a private window, then load an article. Try that first. If it loads, an extension or a saved cookie is breaking your normal session, so you can read while you fix the main window.

  2. Check the official status page

    Open Wikimediastatus.net to see if the service has posted an incident for reading or editing. Check it before you change settings. If that page is quiet, try the next steps because the fault is probably local to your browser or network.

  3. Disable extensions blocking Wikipedia

    Turn off all extensions, then reload an article. In Chrome open More tools > Extensions and use the toggles; Firefox uses about:addons. If the page loads with extensions off, turn them back on one at a time to find the one that blocks the site.

  4. Clear Wikipedia cookies

    Clear cookies and site data for the site, not your whole browser. In Chrome, click the lock icon by the address, choose Cookies and site data, then remove entries for wikipedia.org; Firefox has the same option under the padlock menu. Reload a page after clearing, because a corrupt login cookie can make the site loop or show errors, and if only your login fails, the Wikipedia help centre at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents has account fixes.

  • Saved articles in the mobile app If you added pages to a reading list in the Android or iOS app earlier, you can open them offline while the site won't load.
  • Kiwix Kiwix stores a full offline copy of the encyclopedia on your phone or computer, so it only helps if you downloaded a file before the outage.
  • Wayback Machine Paste the article address into the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to read an older snapshot, which is fine for background facts but misses recent edits.

Wikipedia is a free, volunteer-written encyclopedia, and it is a common reference for students, researchers, casual readers, and anyone checking a fact, so an outage interrupts article reading, search, editing, and talk pages that readers and editors depend on. Some parts can stay reachable while others fail.

Article pages often fail to load first, while search can return errors or no results and the mobile app may show stale cached text. Read-only mode blocks edits and new account signups while you can still read articles. Images and media can break separately because they load from a shared media service, so some pages look fine while others lose pictures. Is Wikipedia down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Wikipedia are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. If an article will not open, try the same one in another browser and on mobile data instead of your home wifi; a page that loads there points at your connection, DNS, or an extension. Why can I read Wikipedia but not edit or save a page?
Read pages are served from a cache, so browsing keeps working while edits and logins fail. If the edit box will not save, log out and back in, then try again with extensions turned off. A save that fails on one article but works on another usually means a template or the page itself is the problem, not the whole service.

What does the Wikimedia error page mean when it says the servers are having a technical problem?
That page comes from Wikimedia's own servers, so your request got through and the application behind it could not answer. It tends to appear during heavy load or after a bad deploy, and it clears on its own much of the time. If only one article throws it and everything else loads, the fault is usually in that page or a template it uses.

Does the Wikipedia app still work when the site has problems?
The app pulls articles over the same API, so live pages fail along with the website. Anything you saved for offline reading still opens, which helps only if you saved it earlier. Saved articles and reading lists are the dependable part while the network side struggles.

Wikipedia will not load on my work or school network. Is the service down?
