How to fix Proofpoint not working

Proofpoint is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach proofpoint.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Check the Proofpoint status page
Look at the official status page first. If it looks normal, retry the sign-in or send once, then copy the exact error text.
Release the quarantined message
Open the newest quarantine digest and use Release next to the missing message; the digest arrives on a schedule, so held mail may not appear there yet. If you cannot find the digest, sign in to the user quarantine and search the last few days for the sender.
Report the blocked link
When a link opens a URL Defense block page, copy the full address and send it to your IT admin with the time you clicked. Retrying the same link will not clear the block; the rule has to change on the admin side.
Ask for a message trace
Ask your mail admin to trace your address and the sender, then check the Proofpoint message log for the delivery decision. Give them the exact subject, sender address, recipient address and timestamp in UTC, since those four fields make the trace quick and show whether the message was blocked or delivered.

Proofpoint on Windows

Fix: Clear your browser cache, disable conflicting extensions, or restart Microsoft Outlook if you are using the Proofpoint encryption add-in. You may also need to check if your Windows Defender Firewall is blocking Proofpoint's mail gateway IPs.
Check: To check if Proofpoint is down on Windows, try logging into the Proofpoint Essentials or Enterprise console via a web browser. You can also check the status of the Proofpoint Outlook add-in to see if it fails to connect to the decryption service.

Fix: Clear your browser's data in Safari or Chrome, and verify that your macOS firewall or security software is not blocking Proofpoint domains. If you use the Proofpoint endpoint agent, try restarting your Mac to refresh the background services.

Fix: Force stop the Proofpoint Mobile Receiver app, clear its cache in your system settings, and ensure the app is updated via the Google Play Store. If you are accessing the web portal, try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data to rule out local network blocks.
Check: Determine if Proofpoint is down on Android by opening the Proofpoint Mobile app to see if it fails to load secure messages. You can also try logging into the Proofpoint web console using your mobile browser.

Proofpoint on iPhone and iPad

Fix: Update the Proofpoint Mobile Receiver app from the App Store, or reinstall it if it continues to crash. Disabling iCloud Private Relay or any active VPN on your iPhone or iPad can also resolve connection issues with Proofpoint.
Check: Verify if Proofpoint is down on iOS by checking if the mobile app displays connection errors when retrieving secure emails. You can also test access to the Proofpoint login portal using Safari.

What happens when Proofpoint goes down

Proofpoint is a security suite that filters email for phishing and malware, and it also handles data loss controls and archiving for companies that route mail through it. When the service fails, mail admins and IT teams lose their console and their message flow together.

Mail delivery is usually the first thing to go, and messages sit in the queue while senders get a delay notice rather than a bounce. The admin console slows. Quarantine pages hang when you try to release a held message, and link protection can fail on its own so a click on a rewritten URL lands on a blank page while ordinary mail still flows. Expect partial trouble, not a full stop: one region or a subset of tenants goes bad while the rest carries on.

Is Proofpoint down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether reports are above their usual level. Check the official status page listed above for a posted incident. To see if the problem is only on your side, try another network and test the same mailbox or admin console from a different device; if those work, the fault is local.

Why is Proofpoint quarantining legitimate email?

Proofpoint quarantines messages when its filters score them as spam or phishing, and a false positive can hit ordinary invoices or newsletters. Ask your admin to review the message in quarantine and release it, then add the sender to an allow list if your policy permits. If the digest is missing too, check whether your admin turned off end-user quarantine access.

Why does Proofpoint rewrite links in my email?

URL Defense replaces links with a Proofpoint URL so a click gets checked before the page opens. The rewritten link can look odd, but it is normal; don't paste it into another tool that strips the wrapper. If a link fails, tell your admin the original destination and the time you clicked it.

Why is the Proofpoint Outlook add-in missing or not loading?

The add-in can vanish after an Outlook update or a sign-in token that expired. Restart Outlook and check the add-in is enabled under Manage Add-ins. If it loads but asks you to sign in, sign out of the Proofpoint add-in and back in. If it still fails, your admin may need to redeploy it from the Microsoft 365 admin center.

Why can't I sign in to Proofpoint Essentials?

Essentials logins fail when the account is locked or your password expired. Use the password reset on the sign-in page, and if that does not work, ask your admin to check the account status and the email address tied to it. MFA prompts can also stall if your phone's clock is off.
