How to fix OpenAI not working

OpenAI is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Reload ChatGPT
Press Ctrl+R on Windows or Cmd+R on Mac to force a fresh page load. On mobile, close the app from the app switcher and open it again. If a single chat stalls, start a new chat from the sidebar instead of waiting on the old one.
Check OpenAI's status page
Open the official status page and look for an active incident. If the page lists nothing, open the help centre and find the article that matches the error you see. A quiet status page rules out a broad outage, though your account or network can still be the problem.
Sign out of the app
In the web app, click your profile icon at the bottom left and choose Log out. On mobile, open Settings and use the log out option. Signing back in refreshes your session and clears errors like 'Something went wrong' that follow you across chats.
Switch networks for ChatGPT
Turn off any VPN or proxy, then switch from Wi-Fi to a mobile connection. Your router or firewall is likely blocking the app if the new connection loads fine. Restart your router only after you confirm the second connection works.

What happens when OpenAI goes down

OpenAI makes ChatGPT and the API that developers build on. Writers, students, support teams, and software companies depend on it for everyday answers, code help, automated workflows, and customer support, so an outage interrupts conversations, uploads, image generation, and live API calls.

Outages rarely hit everything. Chat may stop sending and replies may stall halfway, so you might see a capacity message or a generic something went wrong notice while the page itself loads. Uploads and image generation can fail before plain text chat does, and API calls can time out or return errors even when the web app works for some people. Trouble is often partial: one region or one feature goes down while the rest stays up, so check the official status page and help centre before assuming a full outage.

Why does ChatGPT say it is at capacity?

The at capacity message usually means demand is high or a temporary service issue, and it can hit paid accounts too. Retry after a few minutes if reports at the top of this page are above usual. Why can't I log in to my OpenAI account even though my password is correct?
