How to fix Steam not working

Steam is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach store.steampowered.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Quit and reopen Steam

    Right-click the Steam icon in the system tray and choose Exit, then start Steam again. This clears a stuck session and forces a fresh login. If the window will not close, use Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on macOS.

  2. Check the official status page

    Visit https://help.steampowered.com/en/status to see whether Steamworks or Steam Store is affected. If the service reports an incident, wait for it to clear rather than reinstalling. If all services look normal, continue to the next steps.

  3. Clear the download cache

    In Steam, open Settings, go to Downloads, then click Clear Download Cache. Steam restarts automatically after you confirm. This fixes many stuck updates and failed installs without touching your games.

  4. Verify game files

    Right-click the game in your library, choose Properties, then open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks every file against its manifest and re-downloads anything missing. Run this when one game fails while others work.

    Fix
    Check your internet connection and restart the client. If it still fails, wait a few minutes and try again.

    Means
    The service is overloaded and cannot process your request.
    Fix
    Wait a few minutes and refresh the page or retry the action. Busy periods can cause this, so trying later often works.

  • Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

    Means
    The client cannot update because it is offline or blocked from reaching the service.
    Fix
    Check your connection and any firewall or VPN that might block the client. Then restart it to let it update.

  • Login failed. Please check your password and account name and try again.

    Means
    The account name or password you entered does not match a Steam account.
    Fix
    Retype your password and check the account name for typos. If you still cannot sign in, use the account recovery link on the Steam help centre.

While Steam is down: what to use instead

  • Offline Mode If you signed in on this computer before the outage, pick Start in Offline Mode when the client can't connect, and your installed single-player games should still launch.
  • Steam in a browser When only the desktop client hangs, the store and community pages sometimes still load in a browser.
  • Discord Use it for voice and text with friends while Steam chat won't load.
  • Epic Games Launcher or GOG Galaxy Anything you bought on those stores runs through its own launcher, so a Steam outage has no effect on it.

Restart the Steam client or end its process using Task Manager, and ensure Windows Defender is not blocking Steam's network access. You can also try running the application as an administrator.

What happens when Steam goes down

Steam is Valve's storefront and launcher for PC games, and it handles your library, friends list, Workshop mods and multiplayer. An outage interrupts sign-in first, then everything that hangs off the account.

Login tends to break first: the client sits on the signing-in screen and then throws a connection error, while Steam Guard codes bounce back as invalid. Your library can drop to offline mode, so installed games may still launch but a cloud sync or Workshop download stalls. The store and community pages often fail separately from the client, which is why browsing or buying dies while a friend's copy keeps working. Problems are usually partial and regional rather than total; a dead friends list in one country says little about the store anywhere else.

Steam FAQ

Is Steam down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. If the bar looks normal, the problem is probably on your side. Steam's own status page at https://help.steampowered.com/en/status lists official outages for the store, community and game servers, so check it alongside the report trend here. Try loading a friend's computer or your phone on mobile data too, because a stuck router or a blocked port can look a lot like an outage.

Steam is stuck on 'Updating Steam' or a blank login screen. What do I do?
Close the client completely, then delete everything except steamapps, userdata, steam.exe and the sf/html folders from your Steam directory and start it again so it re-downloads itself. A dead download region causes the same symptom, so open Settings, pick Downloads and switch to a different region. If the client still hangs, uninstall and reinstall without touching your games folder.

I can't trade items or open the Steam Community Market. Why?
Steam Guard and trade holds block most of this. New devices have to confirm trades in the Steam mobile app, and recently purchased items sit in a hold period before they can be sold or traded. If the Market button is greyed out with no obvious reason, check your account's purchase history for a flagged transaction, since a dispute can restrict trading until support clears it.

Why do my games fail to launch or crash with 'D3D device lost' and similar errors?
Those errors usually point at your graphics drivers or an overclock rather than Valve's servers. Update the driver from the maker's site, not from Windows alone, then verify the game files from the local files tab in the client's properties. If you overclocked your GPU or CPU, reset it to stock before testing again. Corrupted shader caches cause repeated crashes on the same loading screen, so clear them when a verify does not help.

My payment failed or my purchase is stuck as pending. What now?
Pending purchases usually clear within a couple of hours, so give it that long before retrying, because a duplicate charge attempt is the common way to end up with two holds on your card. If the payment failed, check that your bank has not blocked the transaction and try a different payment method in your account settings. Orders that stay pending for more than a day are worth a ticket to support through https://help.steampowered.com, since the purchase history page will show what the order is waiting on.
