Troubleshooting

How to fix Spark not working

Spark is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach spark.co.nz over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Force quit and reopen Spark

Quit Spark from the app switcher on iPhone or Android, then launch it again; on macOS, press Command-Q and reopen it. A stuck sync or blank mailbox often clears after the app restarts.

  2. Sign in again to the account

Open Spark's settings, go to Accounts, select the account that will not load, and enter your current password. On macOS, use Spark > Preferences > Accounts; on iOS and Android, open the sidebar and go to Settings > Accounts. Complete any two-factor prompt before you test sending or receiving.

  3. Check background refresh and alerts

On iPhone, open Settings > Spark and turn on Background App Refresh; a paused refresh can leave the app quiet even when mail reaches the server. In the app, open Settings > Notifications and check that the account's inbox alerts are on.

  4. Remove and re-add the Spark account

Remove the failing account from Spark's Accounts settings, then add it back with the same IMAP or Exchange details. Sign in to the provider's webmail first. That check separates a bad password from an app sync problem.

While Spark is down: what to use instead

  • The website Open the service in a browser on a laptop or desktop when the app stalls on its loading screen and never gets to your account.
  • Your phone's built-in mail app If messages are what you are missing, the mail app that shipped with your phone can keep pulling them from the same account while the app is broken.
  • The phone line Call instead of using chat when the in-app support window will not open.
  • A card at checkout Pay with a card or through your bank's own app when the in-app payment step fails, so the order still goes through.

Problems at the same time as Spark

Since 28 October, all 2 of Spark's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Spark goes down

Spark is an email app for iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows that gathers several accounts into one inbox and adds snooze and send later. Freelancers and small teams rely on it, so an outage interrupts new mail, scheduled sends, shared drafts, and push alerts; the status at the top marks when your problem reports rise above their usual level in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours.

Sync stalls first. Your inbox stops refreshing, so new mail sits on the server while the app keeps showing old messages; cached mail may still open, but search and attachments can fail, and scheduled messages can queue without sending. Push alerts often arrive late or not at all, and signing in again can end in a sync error. Problems tend to be partial: one account, one platform, one region, or one network can break while another keeps working.

Questions

Spark FAQ

Is Spark down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Spark are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It reads user reports and nothing else; the site does not ping or probe the service. Check your own side first: load a website in your browser, then switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data and reload it. If both work, open your mailbox in your provider's webmail, because mail appearing there points at the app rather than the account.

I changed my email password and Spark keeps saying authentication failed. How do I fix it?

The app keeps a sign-in token for each account, so a password change on the provider's side leaves the old one dead. Open Spark's account settings, sign out of the affected account, then add it back and approve the sign-in page your provider shows. If two-factor is switched on, approve the prompt on your phone during that sign-in. The error clears once a fresh token is issued.

Why do new messages only appear after I open Spark?

Delivery depends on the app staying reachable, so battery savers and background refresh settings are the usual culprits. On Android, exclude Spark from battery optimisation; on iOS, leave Background App Refresh on and check that notifications are allowed. If one account lags while the rest arrive on time, look at that account's own settings rather than the app-wide options.

A message is stuck in my outbox and will not send. What is going on?

A stuck outbox usually means the connection dropped mid-send, or your provider refused the attachment for size reasons. Delete the message and send it again over a stable connection, leaving out the attachment if it was large. Then check your provider's webmail Sent folder, since the mail may have gone out the first time.

Why did Spark sign me out of every account at once?

Providers expire sessions, and the app drops every account when it cannot refresh one token, so a single dead account can sign you out everywhere. Sign back in, then open each account in turn and clear any password prompt or re-authorisation banner you find. If it keeps happening, remove the accounts you no longer read.

How we track Spark

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Spark, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Spark, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Spark doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
