How to fix YouTube not working

When YouTube itself is having trouble, these steps won't bring it back, but they will rule out anything on your side:

Your browser tries to reach youtube.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check if YouTube is down for everyone

    If reports are spiking, the fault is on Google's side and nothing you do locally will fix it. Wait it out and try again later.

  2. Restart the app and your connection

    Close the YouTube app or browser tab completely, then reopen it. Turn mobile data or Wi-Fi off and back on, or toggle airplane mode for a few seconds. A stale connection is behind most loading wheels that spin forever before showing 'No connection'.

  3. Clear the app's cache and data

    On Android, go to Settings, then Apps, select YouTube, and tap Storage. Clear cache first, and if videos still fail with playback errors, clear data as well, which signs you out. On iPhone there is no cache clearing, so delete and reinstall the app instead.

  4. Update the app or try another browser

    Open the Play Store or App Store and install any pending YouTube update, since an old app version can break playback. In a browser, try Chrome, Firefox or Edge in incognito or private mode with extensions disabled, because ad blockers and privacy extensions are a common cause of endless buffering or a black video player.

    Fix

    Means
    The owner limited this video to certain countries, and yours is not on the list.
    Fix
    There is no setting on your end that fixes it. Contact the uploader if you need access.

  • This video is unavailable.

    Means
    The video cannot play, often because it was removed or restricted.
    Fix
    Reload the page and sign in if needed. If it still fails, the video may be gone or limited.

  • This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated.

    Means
    The account that posted it was closed, so the video is gone.
    Fix
    You cannot restore it from your side. Look for another copy if one exists.

  • The website in a browser If the app sticks on a blank home feed or a spinning video, open the site in Chrome or Safari and sign in there, because the app and the web player sometimes fail separately.

Fix
Clear your browser cache, disable hardware acceleration, or disable conflicting extensions to resolve YouTube playback issues. Make sure your web browser is updated to the latest version.

Fix
Clear the YouTube app cache and data from your Android settings, or update the app to the latest version in the Google Play Store. Restarting your device or reinstalling the app can also fix persistent loading issues.

Check if the YouTube app shows a connection error while other internet-dependent apps work normally. You can also try loading the YouTube website in a mobile browser to verify the app status.

YouTube on iPhone and iPad

Fix
Update the YouTube app from the App Store, or delete and reinstall it to clear corrupted temporary files. Resetting your network settings or toggling Wi-Fi off and on can also restore the connection to YouTube.
Check
Open the YouTube app to see if it displays a connection error, or try accessing YouTube through Safari. If other video streaming apps work, the issue is likely isolated to YouTube.

What happens when YouTube goes down

YouTube is a video platform for watching and uploading, and creators and viewers count on it for music, tutorials, live events, and background noise. An outage interrupts playback and uploads, and it breaks the simple habit of opening the app to watch something.

Playback tends to fail first, with videos stuck on the loading spinner or stopped by a retry message, even when the home feed still loads from cache. Uploads can hang. Comments and likes may fail to post, and the app sometimes returns a blank screen or a generic error instead of the video page. The trouble is often partial, hitting one region or one platform while other features work, so a homepage that loads does not prove playback is fine.

Is YouTube down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not check YouTube itself; it reflects what people report. If the chart looks normal, the fault is probably on your side, so try another app or device and your mobile data before assuming anything.

Why does the app show 'You're offline. Check your internet connection' when my Wi-Fi works?
The app reads your device's connection state, and a captive portal or a VPN can make it think you have no internet even when browsing works. Turn off any VPN or proxy, close and reopen the app, and toggle mobile data on and off. Signing out of your account and back in also clears it for some people.

Videos keep stopping with the 'An error occurred, please try again later' message. What can I do?
That message usually points to the player rather than the site, and a stale cache is the most common cause. Clear the app's cache and data on Android, or use a private browsing window on desktop to rule out extensions. If it only happens on one device, updating the app or your browser fixes it more often than anything else.

Why can I watch YouTube on my phone but not on my smart TV?
TV apps go stale quickly, so check for a firmware or app update before anything else. If the app loads but playback fails, remove the device from your account's linked devices and pair it again, and reboot the TV completely. An old TV app can also get dropped when the service retires outdated player versions, so a slow update rollout can leave one device behind.

My account says 'This channel is not available' or my subscription disappeared. Is the service down?
That is an account or region issue, not an outage. Check whether you are signed into the same Google account you normally use, since a second profile on a shared TV or console is a common trap. If a paid subscription is missing, look at the purchase history in your Google account to confirm it is still active.
