Troubleshooting

How to fix ESPN not working

When ESPN itself is having trouble, these steps won't bring it back, but they will rule out anything on your side:

Your browser tries to reach espn.go.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Try a different ESPN stream

Open another live event or replay in the app; if one feed fails while another plays, the problem sits with that stream, so retry it later. If nothing plays, move on to the next step.

  2. Turn off VPN and check location access

If a live event says it is not available in your area, turn off any VPN and set the ESPN app's location permission to While Using the App. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then choose the app; on Android, open Settings > Apps, then choose the app and Permissions > Location.

  3. Force quit the ESPN app

Close the app from your phone or tablet's recents screen, then open it again. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and flick the app card away; on Android, open Recents and swipe the app card away.

  4. Sign out and redo TV provider login

Open More, then Settings, then Sign Out in the ESPN app, and sign back in with the same account. If a live stream asks for a TV provider, choose your provider and sign in again; the app uses that check for some events.

While ESPN is down: what to use instead

  • ESPN website Open the mobile or desktop site when the app hangs on a loading screen, because the browser may reach scores and stories that the app cannot pull.
  • League sites For one game, use the league site for that sport to check the score and schedule while the app will not refresh.
  • Yahoo Sports Yahoo Sports works for a quick scoreboard scan and headlines when you need the basics without waiting on the app.
  • Broadcast TV Tune to the local broadcast or cable channel carrying the game if a stream stalls, since the TV feed does not depend on the app.
Same time

Problems at the same time as ESPN

Since 27 October, all 11 of ESPN's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when ESPN goes down

ESPN is a sports news and live coverage service across the web and its apps, and sports fans and fantasy players rely on it for scores, headlines, live games, and highlights. An outage interrupts your score checks and video playback, often at the worst possible moment.

Scoreboards usually go stale first, because a frozen clock and numbers that never move are a clear sign. Video fails next. Live streams stall and replays buffer, while the player may bounce you to a menu or sit on a loading screen; headlines can still load fine. Problems are often partial, hitting one sport or one region while the rest of the app works.

Questions

ESPN FAQ

Is ESPN down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for ESPN are above their usual level; it counts reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Try the site on a different network such as mobile data, and open the app on another device. If the site and app load on one connection but fail on another, the problem sits with your network or device. That split is the useful clue.

Why does the ESPN app show a black screen or stall on the loading screen?

A black screen or a stuck loading screen in the ESPN app often comes from a stale app session or a weak connection during a live stream. Close the app and update it from your app store. If the problem only affects one video, switch to another stream or open the same event in a browser to see whether the stream itself is failing.

Why do I get 'This video is not available in your region' on ESPN+?

Some live events carry regional blackout rules, so the ESPN+ app can block a stream even when your subscription is active and the rest of the app works fine. Check the event for a blackout listing, and try another network if you use a VPN. Location controls that stream.

Why does ESPN keep asking me to sign in through my TV provider?

TV providers use sign-in to check live channel access, and a session can drop after a password change or a provider outage. Sign out of the ESPN app and sign back in with the provider credentials; if the provider page loops, clear the browser cache or try the provider's own app. A single channel that fails while others play points to a rights issue for that event. Your login should work if the rest of the app works.

Why is my ESPN+ payment not showing up on my account?

Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google are billed by that store, so the ESPN app may not show a charge or renewal in its own account page. Check the subscription list in the store you used, then sign in to ESPN+ with the same account email. If the app still asks you to subscribe, use the store's restore purchases option before paying a second time.

How we track ESPN

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for ESPN, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for ESPN, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. ESPN doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
