How to fix Canvas by Instructure not working

Canvas by Instructure is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach instructure.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check Instructure's status page

    Open status.instructure.com in a second tab before you change anything on your machine. If Instructure lists an active incident, the fault is on their end and clearing your browser will not fix it. Wait for the all clear, then reload.

  2. Log out and back in

    An expired session often shows up as a page that half-loads or a Submit Assignment button that does nothing. Log out and back in. The Account link sits at the bottom of the global navigation on the left, and a hard refresh can also shake loose a stale page: Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac.

  3. Open Canvas in a private window

    Private mode loads the page without your extensions or stored cookies, which tells you fast whether either is the problem. Chrome and Edge use Ctrl+Shift+N, Firefox uses Ctrl+Shift+P, Safari uses Command+Shift+N. If Canvas works there, switch extensions off one at a time until the page breaks again.

  4. Clear cookies and site data for Canvas

    In Chrome, go to Settings, Privacy and security, Delete browsing data, and clear cookies and other site data; Safari keeps the same controls under Settings, Privacy, Manage Website Data. Blocked third-party cookies break embedded tools such as Google Drive files and publisher homework, so allow them for the Canvas domain while you are there. If none of that works, the Help menu in the global navigation lists your school's support contacts.

What happens when Canvas by Instructure goes down

Canvas by Instructure is a learning management system that schools, colleges and universities use to run courses, assignments, quizzes and grades. Students and instructors depend on it for daily classwork, so an outage interrupts lessons and grading or blocks a submission at the deadline.

Dashboard and course pages fail first: the loading spinner hangs, or a blank screen appears while the rest of the internet works. Uploads then stall at the submission step, and Quizzes may open without saving answers or refuse to load. Grades and Inbox updates lag. Problems are often partial, hitting a single school, a region, Files, or the mobile app rather than the whole service.

Is Canvas by Instructure down right now?

Instructure runs an official status page at https://status.instructure.com, so check that as well. If the site fails on your network but loads for a classmate on another connection, the problem sits on your side. Try a different browser or turn off a VPN, then restart your router.

Why does the Canvas Student app fail to upload my assignment?
A large file can time out, and a stale app session can reject the upload outright. Try a smaller file and switch to Wi-Fi, then submit from a browser if the app keeps rejecting it. Save a copy of your work before the deadline so a failed upload does not erase it.

Why does Canvas keep looping me back to the login page?
A login loop usually means your school's single sign-on session expired or your browser is blocking cookies for the Canvas domain. Sign out of the school portal, then sign in again after clearing cookies for that domain. Private browsing can cause the same loop because it drops the session between pages.

Why does the Canvas app show old grades when the website won't load?
The mobile app keeps a local copy of courses and grades, so it can display stale data while the web version is unreachable. Pull to refresh once the connection returns, and check the browser version before you trust a grade or due date. If the app and the browser show different totals, the browser copy is the one tied to the live course.

Why won't Canvas load a quiz or save my answers?
A quiz can stall when the connection drops during an auto-save or when a proctoring tool loses its link. Watch the save indicator and keep the tab open. Avoid refreshing unless the page tells you to. If the timer runs while no questions appear, contact your instructor and your school's support desk before the attempt closes.
