Troubleshooting

How to fix Free not working

Free is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach free.fr over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reconnect to Freebox Wi-Fi

Turn Wi-Fi off and on, then reconnect to your Freebox network. On iPhone, use Settings > Wi-Fi; on Android, use Settings > Network and internet > Internet.

  2. Restart the Freebox Server

Unplug the Freebox Server power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Leave the TV Player or repeater alone until the Server has finished starting, because the line has to come back first.

  3. Check the Free Mobile APN

For mobile data, Android usually keeps the carrier APN under Settings > Network and internet > SIMs > Free > Access Point Names. The internet APN should be free; on iPhone, check Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network if that carrier menu appears.

  4. Reset the device network

Use this after you have saved Wi-Fi passwords, since the reset removes saved networks and Bluetooth pairings. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings; on Android, go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth.

While Free is down: what to use instead

  • Another mobile hotspot Use a hotspot from a phone on Orange or SFR when your Freebox line is out and you need web access for work or banking.
  • Public or work Wi-Fi Switch to a trusted Wi-Fi network if mobile data is failing but you still need messages, email, or account access.
  • Card payment Pay by bank card at a shop or terminal if an in-app payment or online top-up will not load.
  • SMS and voice calls Try a normal call or text message when an app login, chat, or account page keeps timing out.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Free

Since 3 November, all 6 of Free's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Free goes down

Free is a French telecom operator for home internet, mobile service, TV, and landline service under brands like Freebox and Free Mobile. Families, students, remote workers, and small businesses rely on it, so an outage can cut off broadband, mobile data, calls, TV access, or account management.

Fixed broadband faults often show up first as a Freebox stuck registering, a lost fibre or DSL signal, or Wi-Fi that works inside the home but has no internet behind it. On mobile, data can stall while calls or texts still pass, although a wider network fault can affect voice and SMS too. TV through the Freebox or OQEE may buffer, fail to load channels, or lose replay access while the internet line still looks usable for basic browsing. Problems are often regional or partial, with one city, network type, or app affected while other parts of the service keep working.

Questions

Free FAQ

Is Free down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Those reports come from users who send them to a public outage-reporting service, and this site does not collect reports or decide status from service monitoring. If your Freebox, mobile line, or account page fails while the status looks normal, test another device, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart the box if it is yours, and check whether a neighbour or another line has the same issue.

Why is my Freebox stuck on Étape 2 or Étape 3?

Étape 2 or Étape 3 usually means the box has not completed its line connection, so a local line fault or an area issue can look the same from your living room. Check the top status here for wider reports, then reseat the fibre or DSL cable and restart the Freebox. If it stays on the same step after that, use the help centre: http://www.free.fr/adsl/pages/informations-legales/nous-contacter.html.

Why does my Free Mobile line show no service in France?

If your phone shows no service, try toggling airplane mode and then select the network again from the phone settings. A SIM that fails in two phones points away from the handset, while a second working SIM in the same phone points back to the line or account. Wider report levels on this page can help you judge whether other customers are seeing the same mobile issue.

Why can I sign in to Espace Abonné but not load my bills or settings?

The account area can load the login page while billing or settings pages still fail, so a successful sign-in does not rule out a service-side problem. Clear the browser cache or try a private window, because old session cookies can keep sending you back to the login screen. If several account pages time out and reports are raised here, waiting is often more useful than changing your password again.

Why is the Freebox Connect app not finding my Freebox?

Freebox Connect needs your phone to be on the same home network for local setup, so check that you are on the box Wi-Fi rather than mobile data. If the app still cannot find it, restart the phone and the Freebox, then try from Freebox OS on a browser if you already use that interface. When both the app and browser access fail, the issue may be with the box or the connection rather than the app alone.

How we track Free

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Free, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Free, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Free doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
