Troubleshooting

How to fix Minecraft not working

Minecraft is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Close and reopen the game
Exit the game fully, then open the launcher and press Play again. On Windows, open Task Manager and end the Minecraft process if the window will not close. This clears a stuck loading screen or a world that hangs on 'Building terrain'.
Sign out and back in
Click your profile icon in the launcher, then choose Sign out. Sign back in with the same Microsoft account and press Play. A stale session often shows as a signed-out message on Bedrock or Failed to login: Invalid session on Java.
Lower render distance and graphics
In Java, open Options > Video Settings, then set Render Distance to 8 chunks or lower and Graphics to Fast. On Bedrock, open Settings > Video, then lower Render Distance and set Graphics to Fast. Restart the world after; crashes or stutters when you move often come from heavy chunks.
Flush DNS and reset winsock
On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator, then run ipconfig /flushdns. After that, run netsh winsock reset and restart the PC. Use this when the game says 'Connection timed out' or cannot reach a multiplayer server while other apps work.

Failed to login: Invalid session (Try restarting your game)

Means
The launcher and the game cannot agree on your login token, so the server rejects the join.

Fix
Close the game and the launcher, then sign in again from the launcher before you start the game. If it returns, wait a few minutes and try once more.
Failed to verify username!

Means
The server could not check your account with Minecraft's session service, so it stops the connection.

Fix
Restart your game and launcher, then check your internet connection and try to join again. If the server has this problem for everyone, wait and try later.
You are not whitelisted on this server!

Means
The server has a whitelist turned on and your username is not on it.

Fix
Ask the server operator to add your exact Minecraft username to the whitelist. Until then, join a different server or play in a singleplayer world.

While Minecraft is down: what to use instead

Single-player world When sign-in or Realms fails, a world saved on your own device will often still open, because it runs locally and does not lean on the online servers.
Open to LAN On Java Edition you can open your world to LAN so friends on the same home network can join while the multiplayer services are out.
Terraria It scratches the same mining and building itch in 2D.
Mojang status page Check it before you reinstall anything, since it shows whether the trouble is with sign-in or with Realms.

What happens when Minecraft goes down

Minecraft is a block-building game played on phones and computers, and millions of people use it alone or with friends every day. When the service goes down, you lose sign-in, multiplayer worlds, Realms, and Marketplace access.

Login breaks first. The launcher can reject your password or send you back to the sign-in screen, which blocks anything tied to your account. Multiplayer and Realms go next: servers stall on the connecting screen, Realms invites show offline, Marketplace purchases fail, and skin changes do not save. Single-player worlds usually keep running because they live on your device, though outages are often partial: one platform or region can break while another keeps working, and recovery comes in waves.

Is Minecraft down right now?

If that number looks normal, test another device on the same Wi-Fi and sign out then back in with your Microsoft account; those steps separate a local connection or account problem from a wider outage. Check the official status page for Mojang services if one is listed above.

Why does Minecraft say 'Failed to login: Invalid session' when I try to join a server?

That message often means the game could not verify your Microsoft account with the authentication service. Restart the launcher and sign in again. If you use mods, launch the vanilla profile once to rule out a broken session token; on Bedrock, close the app and reopen it before you retry the server.

Can I play singleplayer or LAN worlds while Minecraft multiplayer is down?

Yes, they do. Singleplayer worlds and LAN worlds run on your own device, so they keep working when Mojang's multiplayer services have trouble. You may still see a sign-in prompt if the launcher needs to verify your account, and public servers will not load until the connection returns.

Why is the Minecraft Launcher stuck on 'Checking for updates' or failing to sign in?

The launcher needs to reach Mojang's update and authentication servers. A local firewall or a stale launcher install can block it. Close the launcher from Task Manager and reopen it as administrator; then try a wired connection or a different network. If Java Edition still fails, reinstall the launcher and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Does a Minecraft outage affect Marketplace purchases or Minecoins?

Marketplace browsing and Minecoin purchases depend on Microsoft account services, so they can fail even when singleplayer works. If a purchase fails, check your Microsoft account payment settings before you retry, and avoid repeated clicks because that can create duplicate pending orders. Your owned content should stay tied to your account once the store reconnects.
