How to fix Spotify not working

Spotify is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach spotify.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Turn off Offline mode and restart the app

    If the app says 'No internet connection available' while every other app on your Wi-Fi works, check that Offline mode is off; on desktop it sits in the File menu, which you open from the three dots in the top left on Windows. Then force close the app and reopen it. A restart clears a stuck player more often than you'd expect, because the app can hold on to a dead connection after your network drops.

  2. Log out and sign back in

    When tracks skip straight to the next one without playing, or your library looks empty, a stale login is a common cause. On mobile, tap your profile picture, open Settings and privacy, scroll to the bottom and tap Log out; on desktop, click your profile picture at the top and choose Log out. Sign back in with the same method you used before, such as email or Facebook, or you may land in a new, empty account.

  3. Clear the cache

    A corrupt cache leads to stuttering playback and songs that spin forever. In the desktop app go to Settings, then Storage, and click Clear cache; on mobile the path is Settings and privacy, Storage, Clear cache. Your playlists and liked songs stay put, though the first few tracks may load slower while the app rebuilds it.

  4. Do a clean reinstall

    If none of that helps, uninstall the app, restart your device and install it again from your device's app store. On Windows and Mac a plain uninstall can leave old files behind, so follow the clean reinstall guide for your system in the Spotify help centre at https://support.spotify.com. You will need to download your offline music again afterwards, because a reinstall removes it.

  • YouTube Music You can sign in with a Google account and find most of the same artists, which helps if the outage drags on and you need music for a commute.
  • Apple Podcasts Podcast listeners on an iPhone or Mac already have this app installed, so your shows keep playing while you wait.

What happens when Spotify goes down

Spotify is a Swedish music and podcast streaming service, founded in 2006, that millions of people play on phones, desktops, cars and smart speakers for anything from a commute playlist to background audio at work. An outage stops playback and can also lock you out of login, search, your saved library and Spotify Connect.

Playback tends to break first: tracks stall at zero seconds, or the app throws a 'Something went wrong' message even though your own connection is fine. Search often comes back empty. Your library and playlists may still load from cache while new pages spin without end, and Spotify Connect can drop speakers or consoles from the device list, so you cannot move audio from your phone to a TV. Problems are often partial, hitting one region or only the web player, though downloaded tracks usually keep playing in offline mode.

Is Spotify down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Spotify are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours, and the official status page at https://status.spotify.com lists outages the company has confirmed. If both look normal, the problem sits on your side. Try the web player or a second device on mobile data; when music plays there, restart the app or your router before you try anything else.

Why does it say "Spotify can't play this right now"?
You get this message when the rights holder has pulled the track or it isn't licensed in your country, and sometimes because the app's cache is corrupted. Check whether the song plays on another device. If it does, clear the cache under Storage in the app settings or log out and back in; on desktop, a local file that has moved or been deleted triggers the same message, so point the app at the right folder in its Local Files settings.

Why won't my speaker or TV show up in Spotify Connect?
Connect finds devices on the same Wi-Fi network as your phone, so confirm both are on it and switch off any VPN, which can block the local discovery Connect needs. Restart the speaker or TV. When it still doesn't appear, update the app on both ends, and on an iPhone check that Local Network access is turned on for the app in your phone's settings.

Why won't my downloaded songs play offline?
Downloads need an active Premium subscription, and the app has to go online at least once every 30 days to keep them; if you miss that window or Premium lapses, the tracks stop playing. Open the app on a connection and let it sync. If songs still show as not downloaded, you may have hit the download limit or cleared the app's storage, in which case you have to download them again.

Why did my Premium switch back to Free?
A failed payment is the common cause, whether from an expired card, a bank decline, a finished trial or a gift card that ran out. Sign in to your account page on the website and update the card there, because you can't manage payment inside the iPhone app. If the charge went through but your account still says Free, contact support through the help centre at https://support.spotify.com.
