Troubleshooting

How to fix NatWest not working

NatWest is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach natwest.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Rule out a NatWest outage

The status line at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for NatWest are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. If reports are high, the fault is likely on their side. Give it time before you touch the app.

  2. Force quit the NatWest app

On iPhone, open the app switcher and swipe the card up and away; on Android, open Settings > Apps > NatWest > Force stop. Reopen it and sign in again, because a stuck session often clears this way.

  3. Clear the NatWest app cache

If you are on Android, open Settings > Apps > NatWest > Storage & cache > Clear cache, then reopen the app and sign in. It deletes temporary files only. Your login details stay put, so give it one more try before a reinstall.

  4. Reinstall the NatWest app

Delete the app and restart your phone. Download it again from the App Store or Google Play, then sign in with your customer number and password.

While NatWest is down: what to use instead

  • Online banking Use online banking from a browser when the app will not load, because the same accounts and transfers are handled there.
  • Debit card Pay with your debit card at the till or online when an in-app payment stalls; card payments run separately from the app.
  • Telephone banking Call telephone banking if you need to move money and the app and website both fail.
  • Cash machine Use a cash machine for cash when the app is down and you need money quickly.

Problems at the same time as NatWest

Since 28 October, NatWest's only spike in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when NatWest goes down

NatWest is a UK high street bank with a mobile app and online banking for current accounts, savings, cards and loans. People rely on it for daily balance checks, moving money, paying bills and using their cards, so an outage interrupts anything from a login to a card payment at the till.

The app and online banking tend to fail first: you tap login and get an error screen, or a balance will not refresh. Transfers and bill payments can stall next, while card taps at a till and ATM withdrawals may keep working for a while. Some outages are partial. One payment type or one part of the app can fail while other services still work, and reports cluster by region and by platform rather than hitting every customer at once.

Questions

NatWest FAQ

Is NatWest down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping, probe, poll or monitor the bank itself. Try the app on mobile data and the website in another browser. If other sites load and only the bank fails on a second device, the problem is probably not your connection.

Why does the NatWest app keep asking me to set up my device again?

Reinstalling the app or changing phones can remove the device registration, so the app asks you to confirm it again. Sign in with your customer number and password, then follow the on-screen verification step. That step can fail. If the prompt loops, try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi and check the app store for an update.

My NatWest card payment was declined but I have enough money in my current account. What should I check?

Check the card controls in the app, because a block on online payments or contactless can decline a payment even when the balance is fine. Look at recent pending transactions too, since a hold can reduce the available balance before it settles. If the card fails in a shop and in the app, ask the bank for a replacement; if only one retailer declines it, the problem is likely with that terminal.

Why is a transfer from my NatWest account showing as pending instead of leaving my balance?

Faster Payments usually leave your available balance at once, but some transfers go for extra checks and sit as pending until they clear. A payee added recently or a mismatch in the account name can hold the payment. Check the payment details in the app and wait for the status to change; contact the bank if it stays pending longer than the app says.

Can I use Apple Pay or Google Pay if the NatWest app is down?

Apple Pay and Google Pay can still work when the app or online banking is unavailable, because the wallet uses a stored card token. Small contactless payments often go through without a bank connection, though larger ones may need a terminal check. If the wallet says the card is unavailable, remove it and add it again only after you can sign in to the app, since reactivation may need a code.

How we track NatWest

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for NatWest, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for NatWest, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. NatWest doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
