How to fix PayPal not working

PayPal is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach paypal.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Check the status page first
Open https://www.paypal-status.com/ in a browser before you touch any account settings. If it shows an open incident on payments or login, waiting is the only thing that helps; nothing in your account can cause or cure a fault on their side.
Try the website instead of the app
Force quit the app, then sign in at paypal.com in a browser and repeat the action that failed. If the site works, the trouble is local to your phone: on Android open Settings > Apps > PayPal > Storage and tap Clear cache, and on iPhone delete the app and reinstall it because there is no cache to clear.
Test the card or bank behind the payment
Open Wallet in the app and confirm the funding source you picked is confirmed and has not expired. A decline at checkout often comes from your bank's fraud check rather than from the service, so call the number on the back of the card and ask whether a hold was placed. If nothing is held, remove the card, add it again, and retry the payment.
Reset access when sign-in keeps failing
On paypal.com choose Log In, then 'Having trouble logging in?' and send the reset link to the email on the account. If your password works but the security code never lands, open the Settings gear, then Security, then 2-step verification, and add a backup phone or an authenticator app. Before you contact support through https://www.paypal.com/cshelp/, copy the exact error wording you see, because the help centre routes you by problem type.

While PayPal is down: what to use instead

Pay by card at checkout Most shops that offer PayPal also take a debit or credit card directly, so pick the card or guest checkout option and type the details in yourself.
Website instead of the app When the app hangs at login or won't load your balance, try the website in a browser.
Apple Pay or Google Pay Plenty of online stores show these buttons next to the PayPal one, and they save you typing a card number on your phone.
Bank transfer To pay a friend back, send it from your bank's own app; it may take longer to arrive.

Fix: Clear your browser's cache and cookies, or try a different web browser to access Paypal. Ensure your system time is set correctly, as SSL certificate mismatches can prevent Paypal from loading.
Check: To check if Paypal is down on Windows, try accessing the Paypal website in an incognito window or check their official status page. If it loads elsewhere but not on your PC, check if a firewall is blocking the connection.

Fix: Force stop the Paypal app, clear its cache in your Android settings, and ensure you have the latest version installed from the Google Play Store. If the issue persists, try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data.

What happens when PayPal goes down

PayPal is an online payment service used mostly in the US for sending money, paying at checkout, managing linked bank accounts, and checking a balance through its website and phone apps. An outage interrupts checkout for shoppers, transfers between people, merchant refunds, and balance checks.

Checkout often fails first. A payment spins without finishing and the confirmation screen never appears, even though the card or bank account behind it is fine, while the app may fail at login or show a balance that will not load. When the trouble reaches transfers, money sent to family or a client can sit as pending while the recipient sees nothing. Problems are often partial: card checkout can fail while a bank account payment works, and one region or one app can be affected while the website still loads; check PayPal's official status page for service notices and its help centre for account help.

Is PayPal down right now?

Why does PayPal checkout show Things don't appear to be working at the moment?

That message means checkout did not finish. A linked card may be declined, or the site and app may not reach the payment step; try the purchase in another browser and on mobile data, then check your account activity for a charge or a decline before you retry with an updated funding source.

Can I use the PayPal app when the website will not load?

The app and the website reach the same account and payment systems, so a website problem can also block app login and checkout. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, then check for an app update before you blame your phone.

Why does a sent PayPal payment show as pending or unclaimed?

A sent payment can sit as pending when the recipient's email is not confirmed or they still need to accept it. Open the transaction details for the status and any cancel option, then ask the recipient to check their account; if the address was wrong, cancel and send it again when the option is there.

A linked bank or card can be declined because the billing details are out of date or the bank has blocked the charge. Update the billing address and expiration date in your wallet, then call the bank to clear the block before you try the payment again.
