How to fix Dota 2 not working

Dota 2 is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

1. Restart Steam and Dota 2

   Close Dota 2, then exit Steam from the Steam menu by choosing Steam > Exit. Reopen Steam and launch your game; a stuck Game Coordinator connection can clear after this.

2. Verify Dota 2 game files

   In Steam, right-click the game in your Library, open Properties, and go to Installed Files. Click Verify integrity of game files and let Steam scan; it replaces missing or corrupted files. This fixes crashes and some launch errors.

3. Clear Steam cache for Dota 2

   Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and click Clear Download Cache. Sign back in after Steam restarts, then launch the game. This helps when the Game Coordinator will not connect or the store and friends list are blank.

4. Allow Dota 2 through firewall

   In Windows Security, open Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Make sure Steam and Dota 2 have Private and Public checked. If the game still cannot reach the network, open Command Prompt as administrator and run `ipconfig /flushdns` and `netsh winsock reset`, then restart your PC.

While Dota 2 is down: what to use instead

• League of Legends If you just want a MOBA match, it runs on Riot's own servers, so a Valve or Steam outage won't stop you from queuing.
• Dotabuff It's good for going over your recent games and item builds.
• Twitch streams Watching a pro or high-ranked player while matchmaking is out keeps you current on the meta, and you might pick up a draft idea or two for when you can queue again.
• Steam offline mode When Steam itself is having trouble, offline mode lets you launch single-player games you already have installed, as long as you've signed in on that PC before.
