How to fix Google Docs not working

Google Docs is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach google.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

Reload the Google Docs tab
Press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Command+Shift+R on a Mac so the page loads fresh instead of from cache. If the editor still sits on a blank page or a spinning loader, click your profile picture in the top right corner, sign out, and sign back in; that clears a stale session without touching your files.
Open the file in a private window
A private window in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari runs without your extensions and without most stored site data. Load the same document there. If it opens cleanly, something in your normal browser profile is the problem, so move on to the next step instead of clearing everything.
Disable extensions and allow cookies
Open chrome://extensions or about:addons and switch off anything that blocks scripts, ads or trackers, since these often stop the editor from saving. Then check your browser's cookie settings: in Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies and add google.com to the sites allowed to use them. Sign-in and autosave both depend on those cookies, so a blanket block keeps breaking the app.
Clear site data, then try another device
In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data, tick Cookies and other site data plus Cached images and files, set the time range to All time, and confirm. Sign in again and reopen the document. If it still will not load on a second browser or your phone, the document itself or your account permissions are the likely cause, and both the official status page and the help centre can tell you where to look next.

While Google Docs is down: what to use instead

Offline mode in Chrome If you switched on offline access in Drive settings before the outage, files you opened recently stay editable in Chrome and sync back once the service reconnects.
Microsoft Word Word, on the desktop or on the web, opens .docx files, so it helps most when you already downloaded a copy of the document you need.
The mobile app Files you marked as available offline in the Android or iOS app open without a connection, which helps when the browser editor shows a blank page or keeps trying to reconnect.

Is Google Docs down right now?

Open a private window, try another browser, switch to a different device, and change from Wi-Fi to mobile data. If the same file or comment still fails, the problem likely follows your account or that file.

Why does Google Docs show 'Something went wrong' when I open a file?

That message usually means the editor could not load the document from Drive, so test whether Drive itself opens in the same browser. Disable browser extensions and reload the tab; if the file still fails, clear site data for Google. When only one document breaks, restore it from version history or make a copy. If the document opens on another device, the trouble sits in that browser profile.

Why can't I edit a Google Docs file that was shared with me?

You probably have view or comment access, not edit access. Open the sharing panel and check the role next to your address; ask the owner to change it to editor. If the file lives in a shared drive, your organization's settings can block editing even when the link works. Make a copy and edit that instead when the owner is unavailable.

Why does Google Docs stop syncing when I edit offline?

Offline editing depends on cached files and a usable connection; if the app cannot reach Google's servers, your changes stay local until it reconnects. Keep the tab open until it syncs, and avoid clearing browser data before then. Check that offline mode is enabled for the file. On mobile, open the app online and confirm the document is set to available offline.

Why does Google Docs open in the wrong account?

If you are signed into a personal and a work Google account in the same browser, a Docs link can open under the wrong profile. Use the account switcher in the top right, or open the link in a private window and sign in only to the account that owns the file. For work files, your admin may also restrict sharing outside the organization. Signing out of the extra account clears the mix-up.
