SNAP EBT outages and problems
In the past 24 hours, 129 user reports came in for SNAP EBT. Counting only the 15-minute windows with a spike big enough to count as an outage, that comes to 100.00% uptime for the day.
The busiest 15-minute window had 5 reports, about 17 hours ago. That stays below our outage threshold, so it doesn't count as downtime.

How to fix SNAP EBT not working
SNAP EBT is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:
Your browser tries to reach fns.usda.gov over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.
Check the SNAP EBT status page level
Open the status page and read the report level at the top; it compares user problem reports with the usual level over the last 24 hours in 15-minute windows. A normal level points to a card, PIN, checkout terminal, or retailer issue rather than a broad service problem.
Try the SNAP EBT card at a second retailer
Use the same card at another store or a different checkout lane. At the terminal, choose EBT and enter your PIN. If the payment goes through there, the first retailer's terminal or network link is the likely cause; if it fails again, the card or account is the next thing to check.
Check your SNAP EBT balance and PIN
Call the number on the back of your EBT card and follow the prompts for balance and card status. If the PIN fails or the card has a hold, ask for a reset or a replacement; too many wrong PIN tries can lock the card, so do not keep guessing at checkout.
Call your state SNAP office
If the card works nowhere and the customer service line cannot fix it, call the SNAP office that issued your benefits and ask them to check the case status and card replacement history. Have your case number and card number ready; a hold or a closed case can stop the card from working even when the EBT system itself is up.
While SNAP EBT is down: what to use instead
- Physical EBT card Use the card at a store checkout if the service will not load; the terminal reads the same benefit account.
- Cardholder phone line Call the EBT customer service number on the back of your card when you need a balance or card help and the service will not open.
- State EBT website Your state's EBT cardholder site can show your balance and recent purchases when the service is down.
- Retailer website checkout If an online grocery order will not go through, try the retailer's website checkout and enter your EBT card there.

What happens when SNAP EBT goes down
SNAP EBT is the electronic benefit transfer system that lets low-income households and people with disabilities pay for groceries with an EBT card. An outage interrupts card approvals at checkout and balance checks that depend on the same payment network.
Card terminals often fail first: a swipe or tap returns a declined or unavailable message even when your balance is there. Balance checks can time out in a state EBT app or on a retailer's payment page, so you cannot confirm what is left before you shop. Online checkout stops at authorization. The trouble is often regional or partial, with one state's EBT system or a single retailer chain failing while other stores keep processing cards.

How we track SNAP EBT
The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for SNAP EBT, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for SNAP EBT, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.
When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. SNAP EBT doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
