How to fix PIA VPN not working

    Disconnect and hit Quick Connect again. A stale tunnel can leave the app stuck on 'Connecting' even though your internet works, so close it fully from the tray or app switcher and reopen it before you touch settings.

  2. Turn off the kill switch

    Open Settings and find Network Lock on desktop or Kill Switch on mobile, then turn it off and reconnect. A kill switch that stayed on after a crash blocks traffic; turn it back on once the connection is stable.

  3. Switch the protocol

    Go to Settings > Protocol and switch from WireGuard to OpenVPN, then reconnect. Some networks block WireGuard's UDP traffic, and OpenVPN over TCP gets through where UDP fails; choose TCP if the app offers it.

  4. Reinstall the app cleanly

    Remove the app and install the latest build from the PIA site or your app store. Old config files and stale network extensions can survive normal updates, so a clean install clears the parts that keep failing after the service itself is fine.

PIA VPN is a subscription VPN app for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and remote workers and travelers use it to keep traffic private on public Wi-Fi and to reach content tied to another country. When the tunnel fails, pages stop loading and video calls drop.

A failed connection usually shows up as a login error or a connection attempt that hangs, and the app can sit in a reconnecting state without ever finishing the handshake. With the kill switch enabled, your device may lose all internet access even though the Wi-Fi or mobile network is working; split tunneling can also stop sending chosen apps through the tunnel. Why does PIA keep disconnecting on my phone?
Phone power saving often cuts the tunnel when the screen is off, and a weak handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular can do the same. Set the app to stay active in battery settings; if the drops continue, switch between WireGuard and OpenVPN to see which holds.

Why does the PIA kill switch leave me with no internet after a disconnect?
The kill switch blocks traffic when the tunnel drops, so a failed reconnect can look like a dead connection even though your Wi-Fi is fine. Reconnect the app and wait for the tunnel to come back; if you need to browse without the VPN, turn the kill switch off, then turn it on again before you rely on it.

Why do some apps skip the PIA tunnel when split tunneling is on?
Split tunneling sends only the apps you choose through the VPN, so the rest use your normal connection and show your real address. Open the split tunneling list and check which apps are set to bypass; remove an app from that list if you want its traffic inside the tunnel.
