How to fix WhatsApp not working

WhatsApp is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach whatsapp.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Toggle airplane mode

    Swipe down the control centre or open Settings and turn airplane mode on, wait about ten seconds, then turn it off. This forces the phone to drop its current connection and grab a fresh one, which clears the stuck-sending and connecting states you see on the chat screen.

  2. Check date and time

    Open Settings, then System, then Date and time, and set it to update automatically. WhatsApp compares message timestamps with its servers; when your clock drifts more than a few minutes, messages sit on a single grey tick.

  3. Clear the app cache

    On Android, open Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp, then Storage, and tap Clear cache. That deletes temporary files without touching your chats, and it fixes the blank chat list and media that won't load. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app instead, since iOS has no cache button.

  4. Reinstall and restore your backup

    Delete the app, install it again from the App Store or Google Play, then sign in with the same phone number and restore from the backup you saved to iCloud or Google Drive. Use this when chats stay empty, the app crashes at launch, or verification texts never arrive; check that your backup exists before you delete anything.

    Open your phone's date and time settings and turn on automatic date and time. Reopen the app, and restart the phone if the message stays.

  • Computer not connected Make sure your computer has an internet connection.

    Means
    The browser has lost its internet connection, so the linked session cannot reach the service.
    Fix
    Check your computer's Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, then reload the page. If other sites fail too, fix the computer's connection first.

WhatsApp is a messaging and calling app for Android, iPhone, web, and desktop. Friends and small teams rely on it for chats, voice notes, video calls, and file sharing, so an outage interrupts conversations, group updates, media uploads, and work check-ins.

Is WhatsApp down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for the service are above their usual level; it counts reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours, and this site does not test the app itself. To check your side, open a different app that needs internet, then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If the app works on one connection but not the other, your network is the likely cause; if it fails on both, restart your phone and ask someone nearby to send you a message. A problem that follows only your phone or only your account points to your side.

Why are my WhatsApp messages stuck on one gray check?
One gray check means the message left your phone and reached the service's servers, but it has not reached the recipient's phone. The recipient may have no data connection or their phone may be off. Wait for delivery; if it stays that way for hours, ask them to check their connection.

Why does WhatsApp show 'Connecting...' and fail to send messages?
That message at the top means the app cannot reach its servers, so messages sit with a clock icon. Check whether other apps load on the same Wi-Fi or mobile data; if they do, force close and reopen the app, then restart your phone. A VPN or a firewall can block the connection even when the rest of the internet works.

Why can't I receive the six-digit code to verify my phone number?
The code can be delayed by SMS filters or a carrier block on short codes. Check that the number is in international format and try the voice call option if it appears. Turn off any call-blocking app on the phone. If you recently moved your number to a new phone or carrier, wait before requesting again; repeated requests can lock verification for a while.

Why does WhatsApp Web log out or fail to link with my phone?
The browser version keeps working only while your phone has a connection and the linked device session stays active. If your phone is offline or has a poor signal, the tab will show a disconnected screen or log out. Reconnect your phone, then link the device again with the QR code. If your phone was reset or you changed numbers, old linked devices drop off.
