Troubleshooting

How to fix Tesla not working

Tesla is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach tesla.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Turn off the VPN and switch networks

    Kill any VPN, then move from Wi-Fi to cellular or the reverse, and open the app again. Tesla's sign-in and vehicle data both need a clean connection, and a hotel or office Wi-Fi login page will stall the app before it ever reaches the account screen.

  2. Force quit and update the app

    Swipe the app away in the app switcher, then check the App Store or Google Play for a pending update. An older build can fail at sign-in after a change on Tesla's side, and the store listing shows your version in a couple of taps.

  3. Sign out and back in

    Open the account menu in the app, sign out, then sign back in with your Tesla account email and password, plus the two-factor code if you have it turned on. A stale session is a common reason a screen sits on a spinner or comes up blank.

  4. Reinstall and re-pair the phone key

    Delete the app, install it fresh, and sign in again. If the phone key has stopped working, sit in the car and open Controls > Locks > Keys to remove the old entry, then add the phone back; Bluetooth permission for the app has to be on or the car will not see it at all.

While Tesla is down: what to use instead

  • Key card Tap the card on the door pillar to get in, then set it on the reader on the center console so you can drive while the app can't reach your car.
  • Phone key over Bluetooth Once it is set up, the phone key talks to the car over Bluetooth at close range, so it often keeps working when the app's remote features fail.
  • Car touchscreen Charge limits, climate and scheduled departure are all on the screen inside the car, which skips the servers entirely.

Fix
Clear your web browser's cache and cookies, or try accessing the Tesla account portal using an incognito window. You can also temporarily disable browser extensions or VPNs that might block the Tesla website.

Fix
Force stop the Tesla app, clear its cache in your device settings, and check the Google Play Store for any pending updates. Toggling your phone's Bluetooth and internet connection can also restore communication with your vehicle.
Check
Open the Tesla app and check if it displays a connection error or fails to update your vehicle's status. If the app cannot connect but your internet is working, the Tesla API servers might be down.

Tesla on iPhone and iPad

Fix
Force close the Tesla app, toggle your iPhone's Bluetooth off and on, and check the App Store for updates. If the app still won't connect to your vehicle, restart your device or reinstall the Tesla app.
Check
Launch the Tesla app to see if it shows a 'disconnected' status or fails to control your vehicle. You can also verify if your internet connection is active by loading a page in Safari.

What happens when Tesla goes down

Tesla makes electric cars and energy storage, and owners rely on its app to check charge and set climate before a trip. An outage interrupts those remote commands and the vehicle status the app shows.

Remote commands tend to fail first: a climate or charge request spins in the app and then reports that the vehicle did not respond. Status can go stale. The app may keep the last known charge level and location, so a refresh that never lands leaves you on old data, while navigation traffic and streaming drop in the car and Bluetooth phone key access often still works because it skips the network. Reports split by region and account, so one owner gets errors while another nearby has no trouble.

Is Tesla down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Tesla are above their usual level over the last 24 hours, counted in 15-minute windows. Tesla has no official status page that we know of, so if reports are low, the fault is probably on your side. Check your internet connection, force close the Tesla app, and log back in; if the car still will not respond, try the key card or the physical key instead.

Why does the Tesla app say my car is offline?
The app shows your car as offline when it cannot reach Tesla's servers over a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, which happens with weak garage signal or a sleeping car. Give it a few minutes, since cars doze off to save power, then tap refresh. If the car is connected to home Wi-Fi, rebooting the router often fixes it.

Why can't I log in to my Tesla account?
A wrong password is the usual cause, but the app also fails to log in when Tesla is running maintenance on its accounts. Reset your password through the app first, and if the reset email never arrives, check your spam folder and confirm you are using the same email you used at purchase. Persistent failures after a reset point to a server-side problem, not your device.

What does 'Key Fob Not Paired' mean in the Tesla app?
This message appears when the app cannot confirm a pairing with a key fob or phone key over Bluetooth. Hold the fob or Phone Key close to the door pillar or center console NFC reader and retry the pairing from the Locks screen in the car. If it still fails, remove the key from the list and re-add it while sitting in the driver's seat.

Why did my Tesla Supercharging session stop or fail to start?
Supercharger stalls sometimes refuse a charge when the connector latch is worn or the cable is damaged, and the car will show a charging fault on the touchscreen. Move the plug to a neighboring stall before assuming the car is broken; one bad stall is common, a whole site failing is not. If several stalls reject the car, contact Tesla support at https://www.tesla.com/support.
