Troubleshooting

How to fix Chime not working

When Chime itself is having trouble, these steps won't bring it back, but they will rule out anything on your side:

Your browser tries to reach chimebank.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Force quit and reopen Chime

On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause, then swipe the Chime card up; on Android, open Recent apps and swipe the app away. Open it again and try the same action once.

  2. Check your connection

Turn Wi-Fi off and on in Settings > Wi-Fi, then load the app again; if the screen still stalls, switch to cellular data under Settings > Cellular on iPhone or Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network on Android. A captive portal or weak signal can make sign-in fail even when other apps look fine.

  3. Update the app

Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, then scroll to Chime under Available Updates and tap Update. On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile icon, then go to Manage apps and device > Updates available and tap Update next to the app.

  4. Reinstall Chime

Delete the app from your home screen, then download it again from the App Store or Google Play and sign in again with the same account details. This clears local app data, so do it after you try the simpler steps.

While Chime is down: what to use instead

  • Debit card Use your card at a store or ATM; card payments can go through even when the app will not open.
  • Cash Carry cash for a meal if your card is declined.
  • Venmo Send money to a friend through Venmo if you need to split a bill and the app will not load.
  • Official status page Check the official status page for updates before you retry a transfer.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Chime

Since 27 October, all 2 of Chime's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Chime goes down

Chime is a mobile banking app for checking and savings accounts, debit card spending, direct deposit, and transfers, and people who use it as their main account rely on it to get paid and pay bills. An outage interrupts app login, card payments, balance checks, and transfers you expect to clear.

During an outage, the app may hang at login, and a debit card can be declined even when you have money in the account. Trouble is often partial or regional. Direct deposit can post late or not show at all, while transfers may sit pending or fail with a generic error message. Login and card payments tend to break first because those are the features you touch at the start of the day, and you may get into the app while a payment fails or see a stale balance after a transfer goes through.

Questions

Chime FAQ

Is Chime down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Check the official status page at https://status.chimebank.com/ for service notices, since this page only counts reports. You can switch networks and try the app on another phone. If the app works there, the problem is on your device or connection; if it fails on both, check your login and account status before assuming an outage.

Why did my Chime card get declined when I have money in my account?

Open the app and check if you locked the card or if a recent transaction is still pending. A hold or a merchant that blocks the card can cause a decline even when your balance looks fine. If the card is unlocked and the balance covers the purchase, contact support through the app.

Why does the Chime app say it can't verify my identity when I try to log in?

A new phone or a fresh install can trigger a verification check. Turn off VPNs and allow camera access if the app asks for a selfie. If the check loops, update the app and contact support from the login screen.

Why is my Chime mobile check deposit still pending?

Mobile deposits can stay pending while the app reviews the check image and the account history. A blurry photo or a missing endorsement will hold it up. Open the app and check the deposit status; if it stays pending longer than the app suggests, contact support through the app. Do not deposit the check again while it is pending.

Why did SpotMe stop covering my purchases?

SpotMe is a temporary buffer that can shrink or pause when your deposit pattern changes or your account is under review. Check the SpotMe section in the app for your current limit and any notice. If it stopped after a missed direct deposit, set the deposit back up and contact support in the app.

How we track Chime

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Chime, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Chime, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. This is separate from Chime's official status page: user reports tend to show a problem early, while the official page confirms the cause. If the two disagree, check both.
