Troubleshooting

How to fix Eskom not working

Eskom is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach eskom.co.za over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reload the Eskom page

If the load shedding schedule page stalls, press Ctrl+R on Windows or Command+R on a Mac, wait for the load to finish, then try the same page in a new tab. A blank screen after that points to the browser.

  2. Open Eskom in a private window

Press Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Command+Shift+N on a Mac, then load the same page there. If it opens, an extension or saved cookie is breaking the normal window; disable extensions one at a time or clear site data.

  3. Try Eskom in another browser

Copy the page address and paste it into Chrome or Firefox. If the page loads there, the first browser has a stale cookie or a bad extension. That isolates the browser.

  4. Try Eskom on mobile data

Turn off Wi-Fi in Control Center on iPhone or Quick Settings on Android, then load the page or app over mobile data. If it works, restart your router and check the Wi-Fi connection on the device, because the service may be fine while your home network is not.

While Eskom is down: what to use instead

  • Eskom phone line Call the utility's phone line to report a fault or ask about your account when the app and website will not load.
  • Banking app A bank app can sell you a prepaid token when the app or site fails.
  • Supermarket till A supermarket till can issue your token while the service is down.
  • EskomSePush Try EskomSePush for load shedding schedules and alerts when you cannot reach the main service and need to know what is planned.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Eskom

Since 28 October, all 4 of Eskom's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Eskom goes down

Eskom is South Africa's main electricity utility. Homes, businesses, farms and public services depend on its grid, so a supply failure cuts lights, refrigeration, internet routers and traffic signals, which stalls daily work and travel.

When supply drops, your lights and appliances stop first, then your router and Wi-Fi fail once backup batteries run out. Cell coverage thins as tower batteries drain; electric gates and traffic signals stop working. Problems are often regional or partial, because a substation fault can darken one suburb while the next area keeps power, and load shedding can hit whole blocks on a published schedule.

Questions

Eskom FAQ

Is Eskom down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for Eskom are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The site does not ping or monitor the service. That status reflects other users' reports, so check your side first: open another site and switch to mobile data; if only the service fails, the problem is between you and the provider.

Why does the Eskom load shedding schedule show the wrong stage for my area?

The schedule often lags when you pick a suburb that sits under a different supply authority, because Eskom and your municipality can publish separate stages. Set your area again. If the pages still disagree, trust the supply authority that bills you.

Why does the Eskom prepaid voucher page reject my meter number?

A voucher page will reject a meter number that has spaces or a missing digit, even when it looks right on the slip. Enter the number from the meter itself and try the purchase again.

Why does the Eskom website log me out while I check my account balance?

The account area can drop a session after a short idle period or when cookies are blocked, so you land back on the login page before the balance loads. Try a private window and sign in again.

Why does the Eskom outage form fail when I submit my address?

The form can fail when the suburb list has not loaded or the address does not match the one on the account, so the submit button spins and nothing saves. Copy the address from your bill and keep a screenshot until you see a reference number.

How we track Eskom

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Eskom, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Eskom, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Eskom doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
