How to fix Scratch not working

Scratch is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach scratch.mit.edu over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reload Scratch in a private window

    Close the tab and open it again in a normal window. If the editor stays blank or a project will not load, try a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome, Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox); a stale cached file or a bad extension can block the page.

  2. Fix a blank stage

    Scratch uses WebGL to draw the stage, so a browser with graphics acceleration off can show a blank stage or drop frames. In Chrome, open Settings > System and turn on 'Use graphics acceleration when available', then restart the browser. If the stage still fails, update your graphics driver.

  3. Save a local .sb3 copy

    If a project stops saving, open the File menu and choose Save now before you keep editing. Then use File > Save to your computer to download the .sb3 file, so a server or sign-in problem cannot take the work with it. Sign out and back in if Save now keeps failing.

  4. Clear Scratch site data

    Open your browser's site settings for Scratch and clear its cookies and stored data, then sign in again. In Chrome, that path is Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > View permissions and data stored across sites. Save any open project to your computer first, because clearing site data can wipe local autosave.

    Means
    Scratch could not load the page or project you asked for, so it served an error page instead.
    Fix
    Reload the page after a short pause. If it keeps happening on every page rather than just one link, wait a bit and try again later, since the trouble is on their side.

What happens when Scratch goes down

Scratch is a block-based coding platform where students and teachers build games and animations in a browser or the offline editor. An outage interrupts project editing and saving, along with the community pages that classrooms and clubs use to share work.

The editor tends to fail first: a project page may load while the block palette stays empty, costumes and sounds refuse to appear, the stage hangs on a spinner, and nothing runs. Saving fails next. Your project can sit on 'Saving...' or show a generic error, and login or community pages may break in patches, with sign-in loops, comments that never load, empty studios, and shared projects missing their assets. Problems are often partial or regional; one page can work while the editor or save path fails for a subset of accounts.

Is Scratch down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Scratch are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping or probe the service, so a calm status only means few people have filed reports. Why does the Scratch editor load to a blank page or a spinning screen?
A blank editor usually means the browser has not finished loading the project player or a script from the site. Clear the site's cache and turn off ad blockers for the tab. Try a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. If the page still stalls, check whether your school or office network blocks the site.

Why won't my project save in the online editor?
The editor saves as you work only when you are signed in and the tab keeps its connection to the site. If the save indicator keeps spinning or you see a warning, leave the tab open and use File > Save to your computer so you keep a copy. Then reload the tab and load the copy back once you are signed in.

Why can't I log in with my email address?
Scratch wants your username on the sign-in form. The email tied to the account is only for password resets and notices. Try the exact username, check caps lock, turn off autofill, and use the password reset link if needed. The reset message goes to the account email, so look in spam or promotions if it does not arrive.

Why can't other people see my shared project?
A project has to be shared before anyone else can open it, and unshared projects stay private to your account. Open the project page while signed out to see what a visitor sees. If it loads for you but not for a friend, ask them to try another browser or network.
