How to fix WeChat not working

WeChat is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach wechat.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Switch networks and test one chat

    Turn off Wi-Fi in quick settings or Settings, then send a short message to one contact. If it goes through on mobile data, your Wi-Fi is the problem, so restart the router or stay on cellular. Switch back and try the same chat again.

  2. Check alert and background settings

    Open Me > Settings > Notifications and turn on New Message Notification. On iPhone, go to Settings > WeChat > Background App Refresh and set it to Wi-Fi & Cellular Data. This fixes alerts that only appear after you open the app.

  3. Force quit and clear cache

    Swipe the app away from your recent apps list, then reopen it and wait for the chat list to load. If chats still stall, go to Me > Settings > General > Storage and clear the cache. Do not clear chat history unless you have a backup.

  4. Update or reinstall WeChat

    Check the App Store or Google Play for an update. If the app still crashes or will not log in, back up your chats, then uninstall it and install it again. If the problem stays with one account only, open the help centre at https://help.wechat.com/cgi-bin/mmsupport-bin/faq?lang=en and send a report.

While WeChat is down: what to use instead

  • Alipay Most shops, taxis and vending machines in mainland China that show a WeChat Pay code also accept Alipay, so you can scan and pay with it until the outage clears.
  • SMS or a phone call Texts and calls go through your mobile carrier, so they still reach anyone whose number you have.
  • QQ Tencent's older messenger has its own accounts and contact list, which helps if the people you need to reach already use it.
  • WhatsApp For contacts outside mainland China it is the usual fallback, though it is blocked inside the mainland.

What happens when WeChat goes down

WeChat is a messaging and social app from Tencent that also handles payments and video calls, so people in China and Chinese communities abroad use it for daily errands and keeping in touch. When it stumbles, chats and payments can stall at once.

Messages often sit on 'sending' while chats already on your phone still open, because the app can read cached threads but cannot reach its servers. Video and voice calls fail to connect. WeChat Pay QR codes may not load, payments can hang at confirmation, mini programs refuse to refresh, and Moments fails to update. These failures are often partial or regional, hitting one carrier or one city rather than the whole service.

Is WeChat down right now?

Why does WeChat say 'Unable to connect to WeChat' when other apps work?
That message usually points to a connection problem between your device and the service, even if a browser or video app loads fine. Check whether a VPN or private DNS is active, because those can block the app's traffic while leaving other apps alone. Turn off the VPN, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, force close the app, and open it again. If your other devices show the same message on different networks, the service is the likelier source.

Why did my WeChat Pay payment fail but my bank shows no charge?
A failed payment often stops before the bank posts anything, so a missing charge does not mean the order went through. The app may show a payment failed screen when the connection drops during confirmation or when your bank blocks the transaction. Open the payment history in the app and check the order status there; if it says failed, ask the merchant to send a new request instead of paying twice.

Why can't I log in to WeChat after reinstalling it or moving to a new phone?
A new install often asks for a verification code or a QR scan from an old device. If you no longer have the old phone, you can get stuck at that step because the app ties your account to trusted devices and recent activity. Try the same phone number on the old device if you still have it, or use the help centre to start account recovery. Do not pay anyone who offers to recover the account for you.

Why are WeChat messages delayed or not arriving until I open the app?
On Android, battery optimization can stop the app from waking in the background, so messages sit on the server until you open it. On iPhone, a low power mode or a restricted background app refresh setting can cause the same delay. Check that notifications are allowed for the app and that your phone is not set to restrict background data. If chats arrive on another device at once, your main phone is the problem.
