Troubleshooting

How to fix Openserve not working

Openserve is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach openserve.co.za over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Power-cycle the ONT and router

Unplug power from the router and the fibre ONT, wait 30 seconds, then plug in the ONT first and the router once the ONT finishes booting. Wait for the PON light to go solid before you retry.

  2. Check the ONT LOS light

Look at the ONT: a red LOS light or a PON light that never goes solid means no optical signal reaches the box, so check that the thin fibre patch lead is clicked into the ONT and the fibre point and remove any sharp bend. If the light stays red, call your ISP and ask it to log a fault with Openserve.

  3. Test one device over Ethernet

Connect a laptop to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi on the laptop. If the wired connection works, the fault is in your Wi-Fi settings or coverage; if it fails, the problem sits between the router and the line.

  4. Run IP and ping checks

On Windows open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /all, then ping 1.1.1.1; on macOS or Linux open Terminal and run ifconfig or ip addr, then ping 1.1.1.1. A valid IP address with failed pings points to the router or line, while no valid IP points to a local connection problem.

While Openserve is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot Share your phone's mobile data for email and messages while the fibre line is out.
  • ISP support line Call your internet provider because they hold your account and can test the line or log a fault.
  • LTE backup router Use a router with a SIM card if you have one; it keeps a few devices online for calls and urgent work.
  • Public Wi-Fi Use a library or cafe connection for short tasks when mobile data runs low, and skip sensitive logins on a network you do not control.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Openserve

Since 28 October, all 2 of Openserve's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Openserve goes down

Openserve runs the wholesale fibre network that many South African internet providers use to connect homes and businesses, so your line depends on it even though you buy from your ISP. An outage interrupts the fibre link your router needs and the calls or remote work that ride on it.

The first sign is usually your router losing its internet connection while Wi-Fi stays up, so local devices still see the network but cannot reach anything outside. Some faults are partial. A damaged fibre segment or a network-side failure can take out one suburb or one provider's customers in a region, and a neighbour on a different ISP may stay online while your line is dead. If the optical light on your ONT turns red, the fibre path itself is down and restarting your router will not fix it.

Questions

Openserve FAQ

Is Openserve down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. This site does not ping or probe the service itself; the count comes from user reports alone. To check your side, look at the lights on your fibre box, restart your router, try mobile data, and ask someone on the same street whether their line is down; if the same fault follows your line, log it with your ISP.

Can I order Openserve fibre directly from the company?

You normally order through an ISP that sells the service, because the network is wholesale. Ask that ISP to confirm coverage at your address and whether the line is already active.

Why does my router say connected but pages will not load on Openserve fibre?

A connected Wi-Fi link only means your device reached the router; the fibre line or ISP login can still be down. Check the lights on the fibre box and restart the router. Use mobile data as a comparison, and if the red fibre light stays on, contact your ISP with the address and line details.

Why does my Openserve fibre order stall after the cable is installed?

Installation and activation are separate steps, so the box can be on the wall before the line is live. Contact the ISP that placed the order with your order number and address; ask it to check whether activation is waiting on Openserve or on your building.

Does Openserve fibre work in apartments and complexes?

Coverage inside a complex depends on the building's fibre setup and landlord or body corporate approval. Give your ISP the unit number so coverage and permission get checked before installation; the street map alone does not settle it.

How we track Openserve

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Openserve, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Openserve, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Openserve doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
