Troubleshooting

How to fix IRCTC not working

IRCTC is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach irctc.co.in over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Switch networks and reopen IRCTC

Turn off any VPN and move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way, then close the app and open it again. A stale tab or an expired booking session can make the page look dead, so start a fresh sign-in if the first reload stalls.

  2. Clear the Rail Connect cache

On Android, open Settings > Apps > IRCTC Rail Connect > Storage & cache > Clear cache. If you use iPhone, delete the app and reinstall it when the screen stays blank or freezes at login; clearing app data on Android signs you out.

  3. Try the booking page in a desktop browser

Sign out and open a private or incognito window in a desktop browser for the booking flow. Turn off ad blockers and popup blockers for the payment redirect, because those can stop the bank page from loading.

  4. Check the payment and booking history before retrying

If money left your account but no ticket appears, do not start another payment; note the bank reference and check your booking history in the app or on the website. Wait for the bank page to settle, then sign in again and confirm whether the ticket was issued before you retry.

While IRCTC is down: what to use instead

  • IRCTC website Use it when the app fails at login or payment; the browser booking often gets through.
  • Station reservation counter For a train leaving soon, go to a staffed counter at a major station and buy the ticket in person; bring ID and the train details.
  • National Train Enquiry System If you only need to know whether a train is late, this shows running status and revised timings without the booking flow.
  • Indian Railways enquiry line Call it for delay updates.
Same time

Problems at the same time as IRCTC

Since 28 October, all 3 of IRCTC's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when IRCTC goes down

IRCTC runs Indian Railways online ticket booking, and passengers and travel agents rely on its website and app for reservations, cancellations, PNR checks, and food orders. An outage interrupts trip planning and leaves travelers unable to book or cancel a seat.

The status at the top of the page reflects user problem reports counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; this site does not ping or monitor the service itself. Booking often breaks first: you may see slow pages, or payment goes through while the ticket stays unconfirmed. Your PNR check or cancellation may time out, and Tatkal bookings fail under heavy load because the window draws concentrated traffic. Trouble can be partial, with one app platform or payment route failing while another part still works, and reports often spread across regions when the booking flow itself goes down.

Questions

IRCTC FAQ

Is IRCTC down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for IRCTC are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Test your side by switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data and opening a different site on the same connection. If other sites load and the app fails only on your phone, the problem is likely local; if every device on your network fails, check your router or ISP.

Why does IRCTC keep saying my session has expired when I try to book?

The booking page times out after inactivity, and a slow payment step can push you past that limit. Sign in again with passenger details ready before payment; a second tab on the same login can also end the session. Check pop-up blockers if the bank page never appears.

Why does IRCTC show payment failed but my bank account was debited?

A failed booking can leave a hold on the amount while the bank and the service reconcile the transaction; the ticket is not confirmed until your booking history shows a PNR. Check that history before you pay again, because a second attempt can create a second charge. Take the transaction reference to your bank if the debit stays and no ticket appears.

Why can't I book Tatkal tickets in the IRCTC Rail Connect app?

Tatkal booking puts heavy load on the service, and the app can time out at login or payment during the rush. Save passenger details before you start so you spend less time on each screen. If the app keeps failing, try the website on a different connection.

Why does IRCTC log me out when I switch to my banking app?

Mobile browsers often unload a tab when you switch to a banking or UPI app, and that breaks the return to the booking page. Use the Rail Connect app or a desktop browser if your phone keeps dropping the session; finish the bank step in the tab where you started.

How we track IRCTC

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for IRCTC, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for IRCTC, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. IRCTC doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
