Troubleshooting

How to fix Verizon Fios not working

Verizon Fios is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach verizon.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reboot the Fios router, then your device

Unplug the router's power cord, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Let the router finish booting, then restart the phone or laptop that lost the connection; if only that device fails again, the router is probably fine and the device is the problem.

  2. Compare Ethernet against Wi-Fi

Connect a laptop to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable and load a site. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, forget the network on your phone or laptop and join it again: on iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the info button > Forget This Network, and on Windows 11, go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks > Forget.

  3. Renew the device's IP address

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew. On a Mac, open System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details > TCP/IP and click Renew DHCP Lease; this clears a stale address without touching the router.

  4. Check the Fios router WAN status

Open a browser to 192.168.1.1 and sign in with the router admin password printed on the label. Find the Internet or WAN status; if it shows no address or a disconnected state, power cycle the router and the ONT where the router connects, then call Verizon if it stays down.

While Verizon Fios is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile data Mobile data on your phone works for email and maps when the home line drops.
  • Mobile hotspot Turn on your phone's hotspot to keep a laptop online for a work call when the home connection fails and the cell signal is strong enough.
  • Public Wi-Fi Public Wi-Fi at a library or cafe helps for a larger download or video call when you can leave home.
  • Support phone line Call Verizon support from a mobile phone to report the outage when the home line is dead.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Verizon Fios

Since 27 October, all 4 of Verizon Fios's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Verizon Fios goes down

Verizon Fios is a fiber broadband service for home internet and TV, and households, remote workers, students and small businesses rely on it, so an outage can cut video calls, streaming, smart-home controls and phone service at once. The status at the top of each page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; the app does not ping, probe, poll or monitor the service itself, and it never checks from multiple locations.

During an outage, your router may stay powered while pages stall and video calls freeze first; streaming drops, smart-home controls stop responding, Fios TV can pixelate, and on-demand titles fail to load. Some connections slow to a crawl before they fail outright, and a digital voice line may lose dial tone if the ONT or local line is affected. Check the report level. Problems often stay regional or partial, so one neighborhood or a few services can fail while the wider network holds; a bad router or ONT can produce the same symptoms.

Questions

Verizon Fios FAQ

Is Verizon Fios down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Verizon Fios are above their usual level. The site counts reports in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours and does not ping or probe the service itself. To tell whether the problem is only on your side, reboot the router and check another device on the same network; if that device works, the issue is local to the first device.

Why does my Fios router show a red light and no internet?

A red light on the router often means it lost its connection to the network, so check the power cable and the coax or Ethernet cable at the wall. Unplug the router for 30 seconds and plug it back in. If the light stays red after a few minutes, call Verizon support because the line or equipment may need service.

Why does the My Fios app keep signing me out?

The app can sign you out after a password change or a problem with the account sign-in. Restart your phone and sign in again with your user ID. If it still fails, reset the password on the account page and try once more.

Why does my Fios TV box say I am not subscribed to a channel?

That message often means the box has not picked up your channel package or the account has a billing hold. Restart the TV box, then check the app for any account alert. If the box still blocks the same channels, Verizon support can refresh the signal.

Why did my Fios bill go up without a plan change?

A bill can rise after a promotion ends or a rental charge changes. Some charges do change. Open the bill in your account and compare the charges with the prior bill, line by line, because a wrong charge will show up as a new line or a higher amount. If something looks off, contact Verizon support before you pay it.

How we track Verizon Fios

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Verizon Fios, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Verizon Fios, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Verizon Fios doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
