Troubleshooting

How to fix Cox not working

Cox is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach cox.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart the Cox gateway

Unplug the gateway's power cord, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Leave it alone while the status lights cycle; a full reboot can take a few minutes, and the connection may drop again briefly before it settles.

  2. Reconnect the device to WiFi

Turn WiFi off on the phone or laptop, then turn it back on and join your home network. If it still fails, forget the network in Settings > Wi-Fi, then sign in with the network password again; on a computer, remove the saved network under Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.

  3. Check the coax and power

Hand-tighten the coax cable at the wall jack and at the gateway, and push the power plug fully into both ends. Remove any extra splitter between the wall and the gateway, then restart the gateway again if the cable was loose.

  4. Test a wired connection

Connect a laptop to the gateway with an Ethernet cable and turn off WiFi on the laptop. If the wired connection works, the issue is in your router or wireless setup; restart the router and check its Ethernet cable. If the wired connection also fails, try another active coax outlet if you have one, then contact Cox support from a phone that has a signal.

While Cox is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot Use your phone's cellular data as a hotspot when the home connection drops and you need a laptop online.
  • Public Wi-Fi Go to a library or cafe with Wi-Fi when you need to send email or finish a download and can step out.
  • Over-the-air antenna Switch the TV to a plain antenna when cable channels are out and you want local broadcasts.
  • Cell phone Make calls on a cell phone when the home phone line is down and you need to reach someone.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Cox

Since 27 October, all 3 of Cox's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Cox goes down

Cox is a US cable, broadband, TV, and phone provider. Homes and small businesses rely on it for work and streaming, so an outage interrupts the connection that carries those services and can stop a video meeting or drop a landline call.

You may see the internet side struggle first: pages stall and downloads stop. Video calls can freeze or drop to audio while the cable TV signal still reaches a set-top box. On-demand titles and app playback fail once the internet connection drops, and phone service can lose dial tone or cut out mid-call. Problems tend to hit one neighborhood or part of a metro rather than the whole footprint, and one service can fail while another stays up.

Questions

Cox FAQ

Is Cox down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Cox are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. To see if the trouble is only on your side, try another device on the same connection, switch one device to mobile data, restart your router, and check whether a neighbor sees the same drop. If every device fails the same way, the problem is local to your home network or the line into it.

Why does my Cox email stop syncing in the Mail app?

Cox email often stops syncing after a password change, because the phone keeps the old login. Sign out of the mail app and sign back in with your password; if the app still shows a login error, remove and re-add the account. If the mailbox opens on the web, the trouble is in the phone app settings.

Why does my Cox Contour box freeze or show a black screen?

A frozen Contour box can come from a loose HDMI cable or a box that needs a restart. Check the TV input and reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. Unplug the box for a minute, then plug it back in. If the picture drops again on the same channel, the signal to that box or the channel feed is the likely cause.

Why does the Cox app show a bill I already paid?

A payment can stay pending in the app while the bank and Cox finish posting it. Check the payment date and the confirmation number in your account, then give the app a fresh sign-in before you pay again. If the balance still shows the old amount after the payment clears, the account needs a manual review.

Why does my Cox Panorama WiFi drop on video calls but work on other devices?

Panorama WiFi can favor one device near the router while a call drops in a weak room, so check coverage in that room first. Test the call next to the router, then test again on mobile data; if the call holds on mobile data, the home WiFi link is the weak point. Move the device closer or add a mesh node for that room.

How we track Cox

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Cox, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Cox, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Cox doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
