How to fix GTA 5 not working

GTA 5 is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

  1. Quit GTA 5 fully

    On PS5, press the PS button, highlight Grand Theft Auto V, press Options, and choose Close Game; on Xbox, open the guide, highlight the game, press Menu, and choose Quit. A suspended session can hold a bad connection, so start the game fresh before you change any settings.

  2. Check the Rockstar status page

    Open the official Rockstar status page and check the entries for Grand Theft Auto Online and Social Club. If either shows limited, the fault is on Rockstar's side. A reinstall will not fix that, so wait for the status to clear.

  3. Verify GTA 5 files

    In Steam, open your Library, right-click Grand Theft Auto V, choose Properties, then Installed Files and Verify integrity of game files. The Rockstar Games Launcher puts its own check in Settings under My installed games; select the game and click Verify Integrity. Let the check finish before you launch the game again.

  4. Flush DNS and test the connection

    On Windows, run ipconfig /flushdns from an administrator Command Prompt, then restart the PC. On PS5, go to Settings, Network, Connection Status, and choose Test Internet Connection. Launch the game again.

Is GTA 5 down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Everything there comes from reports people file; the site never pings or probes the servers itself. To rule out your own setup, load the game on a different network or device and see if the same thing happens. The official status page listed above will confirm an outage on Rockstar's side.

GTA Online keeps saying it can't connect to Rockstar game services. Is that my connection or theirs?
That message means the game cannot reach Rockstar's servers, and your console or PC is usually fine. Rockstar's own status page splits outages by service, so check it before you start resetting your router. Closing the game fully and reopening it clears a stuck session more often than a reinstall does.

I bought a Shark Card and the cash never appeared in GTA Online. What happened?
Shark Card money lands in your in-game bank account, not as cash in your pocket, and it can take a while to show up during busy periods. Give it some time before you panic, then check your Maze Bank balance rather than the cash figure on the HUD. If it still is not there, contact Rockstar Support with your receipt; do not buy a second card to test it.

GTA Online said my save failed. Have I lost my character?
A save failure mid-session is usually a dropped connection, and the game falls back to your last confirmed save instead of wiping the character. Do not force quit while that warning is on screen. Wait for the retry to finish, or close the game cleanly, then check whether other online features work before you assume your profile is damaged.

What does 'Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded' mean?
The game could not fetch or verify an update, and this tends to follow a patch day. Restart the launcher and let the download finish without pausing it. If the error keeps coming back, the official status page will tell you whether a platform update is still rolling out.
