Troubleshooting

How to fix Optus not working

Optus is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach optus.com.au over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Reconnect your phone to Optus

On iPhone, open Control Center and switch Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, then switch it off; on Android, swipe down twice and use the Airplane mode tile the same way. Turn mobile data off and back on, then try a call and a webpage. Your phone then reattaches to the Optus network.

  2. Reseat the Optus SIM

For a physical Optus SIM, power the phone off, open the SIM tray, wipe the gold contacts, and put the card back in the same slot. Start it up and test calls and mobile data.

  3. Power-cycle the Optus modem

If your home broadband is out, unplug the Optus modem's power lead, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Check the power and internet lights, then test a wired connection before you try Wi-Fi.

  4. Reset network settings for Optus data

On iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On Android, open Settings > System > Reset options and choose the entry that resets network settings; the label varies by maker. That reset clears saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, so rejoin your home network afterward.

While Optus is down: what to use instead

  • Telstra or Vodafone SIM A Telstra or Vodafone SIM in a spare phone keeps calls and data going when your main mobile line drops.
  • Wi-Fi calling Turn on Wi-Fi calling in your phone settings if your home broadband is up, so calls and texts can go over the internet while the mobile signal is out.
  • WhatsApp or Signal Send messages or make calls over Wi-Fi with WhatsApp or Signal when normal texts and calls will not connect.
  • Optus website Use the website in a browser when the app will not load, to reach account or bill details over Wi-Fi.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Optus

Since 28 October, all 5 of Optus's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Optus goes down

Optus is an Australian telecom provider with mobile and home broadband services. Households and small offices rely on it for calls, messages, payments, and live sport, so an outage cuts off the everyday links you expect to work.

Mobile data often goes first: pages stall and messages sit unsent, while your phone shows No Service or SOS only. Home broadband is a separate failure; the router stays on, but every device loses the internet. The account app can refuse a login, and the sports stream stalls mid-match even when home Wi-Fi still works. Trouble is often regional or partial, so one suburb clears while the next stays offline.

Questions

Optus FAQ

Is Optus down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping or probe the service. To tell whether the problem is only on your side, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data and try another device on the same connection; if the same app or site fails on both, the problem is likely outside your home, and if only one device fails, look at that device.

Why does the My Optus app keep signing me out?

The app can sign you out after a password change, an app update, a long gap between sessions, or a glitch in the saved login. Try signing in with mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, then reinstall the app if the same sign-out returns. If the app stays signed in on another phone, the problem is on your handset.

Why will my Optus prepaid recharge not go through?

A recharge can fail when your card issuer blocks the payment or when the saved card details have expired. Try another card and check that the service number matches the one you want to top up. If the payment still fails, your bank may need to approve the transaction.

Why does Optus Sport keep buffering on my TV?

Buffering often starts with the link between your TV and the router. Try a wired connection or move the TV closer to the Wi-Fi, then test the same stream on your phone. If the phone streams cleanly, the TV or its connection is the likely cause.

Why does my phone show No Service on the Optus network?

No Service can mean a loose SIM, a wrong network setting, a local coverage gap, or a handset fault. Reseat the SIM card. Then check that automatic network selection is on, and try the same SIM in another phone; if it works there, the handset is the likely cause.

How we track Optus

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Optus, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Optus, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Optus doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
