Troubleshooting

How to fix GCI not working

GCI is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach gci.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Rejoin the GCI Wi-Fi network

On the affected device, open Settings, then Wi-Fi, forget the saved network, and join it again with the password. That clears a bad saved connection before you touch the router.

  2. Restart the GCI modem and router

Unplug the modem and router from power, wait 30 seconds, plug the modem back first, and let its online light settle before you plug in the router. That order lets the line reconnect before the router asks for an address.

  3. Test the GCI modem with Ethernet

Connect a laptop to the modem with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi on that laptop. Load a site; if the page opens, your Wi-Fi router or the affected device is the problem. If it fails, the modem or the line is the likely fault.

  4. Call GCI support with device details

Call GCI support and describe which device fails while others work; give your account number and the modem's MAC address. They can check the line from their side and tell you if a technician visit is needed.

While GCI is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile hotspot If you have a phone on another carrier, turn on its hotspot so a laptop or tablet can stay online.
  • Public Wi-Fi Use a library, cafe or workplace network for email and messages until the connection comes back.
  • Phone line Call the service's support line from a mobile or landline to report the outage and ask for repair updates.
  • Browser instead of app Open the service in a web browser on another connection if the app will not load or keeps failing.

Problems at the same time as GCI

Since 27 October, all 6 of GCI's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when GCI goes down

GCI is an Alaska communications provider; households and businesses rely on its internet and mobile service for work and daily calls. An outage cuts those links and can leave a home or office offline.

During an outage, your home internet can drop or slow to a crawl, and mobile data may stall or fail to load pages. The first sign is often a page or app that will not refresh, while TV service can freeze if it runs over the same connection. Some outages are partial. Reports can cluster in one area or on one service, so a neighborhood may be offline while another works.

Questions

GCI FAQ

Is GCI down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The page does not ping or probe the service itself. To tell if the problem is only on your side, try another device on the same connection and restart the router or modem; if other apps and sites load, the fault is likely local.

Why can't I sign in to MyGCI?

A password error on the MyGCI sign-in screen is often a bad saved password or a stale app session, so reset it from the sign-in link and try the website as well as the app. If the reset email never arrives, check the spam folder and confirm you are using the address tied to the account.

Why did my GCI bill payment fail?

A failed payment in MyGCI often comes from an expired card or a billing address that no longer matches the card on file. Update the card details and try once; if your bank shows a pending charge, wait for it to clear before you pay again.

Why does my GCI internet keep dropping on Wi-Fi?

Drops that hit only Wi-Fi often come from router placement or an old channel, not a wide outage. Test a wired device on the same modem, then move the router off the floor and away from metal; if the wired link holds, the wireless side is your problem.

Why is my GCI wireless coverage weak in rural Alaska?

Alaska coverage changes fast by community and even by road, so a weak signal at one spot does not mean the network is down. Try Wi-Fi calling if your phone supports it, and test the SIM in another device before you blame the handset or the network.

How we track GCI

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for GCI, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for GCI, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. GCI doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
