Troubleshooting

How to fix Rain not working

Rain is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach rain.co.za over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Re-register on Rain

Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off. That forces the phone to register with the network again; on iPhone the switch is in Settings > Airplane Mode, and Android has a quick settings tile.

  2. Turn on mobile data for Rain

Open Settings > Mobile network and check that Mobile data is on. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular and make sure Cellular Data is on; if the switch is already on, toggle it off and on once.

  3. Check your Rain account and data balance

Open the app and check the account screen. Look for an active subscription and any data left; if the app will not load, sign in from another connection and check the same details there.

  4. Set the Rain APN and reseat the SIM

Set the APN to rain and leave username and password blank. On Android the path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your SIM > Access Point Names; on iPhone use Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network. Then power off the phone, take out the SIM, put it back, and power on.

While Rain is down: what to use instead

  • Wi-Fi Switch your phone to a Wi-Fi network you trust when mobile data drops, since calls over Wi-Fi and messages can keep working while the mobile link is out.
  • Second SIM A prepaid MTN or Vodacom SIM gives you a separate route for calls when the signal is missing.
  • Web browser Open the service's website in a browser to check your account or buy a data bundle when the app will not load.
  • Home broadband Use home broadband for downloads when mobile data is down.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Rain

Since 28 October, Rain's only spike in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Rain goes down

Rain is a South African data network; phone customers and home broadband customers rely on it for mobile data and fixed 5G or 4G access, so an outage cuts web browsing and app-based account tasks. The status at the top compares visitor problem reports with the usual level in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours.

On your phone, the first sign is often that mobile data stops passing traffic while the signal bars stay up, so pages time out and apps report no connection. A router can keep its lights on and still lose internet access. The app may fail to load usage or accept a top-up before the network recovers, and those account errors can outlast the data drop. Coverage problems are often regional or partial, so one area may lose 5G while 4G still works and nearby customers stay online.

Questions

Rain FAQ

Is Rain down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Rain are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The site does not ping or probe the service itself. To rule out your side, try the same account on another device and network, and restart the app or router before you blame the service.

Why does my Rain 5G router show no internet when my account has data?

Start with a clean reboot. A router can keep an old session after a power cut or a tower change, so unplug it for a minute and let it reconnect. If the app still shows your account as active, move the router near a window and check the SIM seat.

The Rain app will not send my login OTP. What can I check?

OTP delivery can fail when your phone blocks short codes or the number on the account has changed. Check the SIM against the profile number, and turn off any message spam filter. Do not resend the code five times.

Why did my Rain payment fail when I tried to buy data?

A card payment can fail because of a bank block, an expired card, a name mismatch, or a one-time approval that timed out. Correct the card details in the app and approve the bank prompt before you retry.

Why does my Rain SIM show no service in a new phone?

Your new phone may not support the same 4G or 5G bands, or its SIM tray may not read the card cleanly. Reseat the SIM and check the data setting for that slot. Test the old phone in the same spot, then try another SIM in the new handset. If the old phone still gets a signal, the new handset is the likely cause.

How we track Rain

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Rain, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Rain, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Rain doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
