Troubleshooting

How to fix YouTube Music not working

YouTube Music is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach music.youtube.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart YouTube Music and switch networks

Close the app from the recent apps screen, then open it again; on Android, use Settings > Apps > YouTube Music > Force stop if the app will not close on its own. Turn Wi-Fi off and try mobile data, then reverse the test, because one dead network path can look like an app failure.

  2. Update the app from its store

Open the Play Store and go to profile icon > Manage apps and device > Updates available; on iOS, open the App Store and go to profile icon > Update. Install any pending update, since an old build can fail on a changed sign-in or playback route.

  3. Clear the YouTube Music cache on Android

On Android, open Settings > Apps > YouTube Music > Storage & cache > Clear cache, then reopen the app. iOS has no per-app cache button, so move to the reinstall step if playback still fails.

  4. Reinstall the app and sign in

Delete the app from your phone, then install it again from the Play Store or App Store. Sign in with your Google Account and try one track before you restore downloads, because a fresh install clears local state that an update or cache clear may leave behind.

While YouTube Music is down: what to use instead

  • YouTube If the app will not open, the main YouTube site can play official music videos that also exist there.
  • Spotify Spotify works when playback stops and you need another catalog.
  • Apple Music On Apple devices, Apple Music gives you a separate library and radio option while the app is unusable.
  • SoundCloud For mixes and independent tracks, SoundCloud has a browser player and a separate catalog.
Same time

Problems at the same time as YouTube Music

Since 27 October, all 2 of YouTube Music's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when YouTube Music goes down

YouTube Music streams albums, live sets, playlists, and uploads across the web and mobile apps. An outage interrupts playback, search, library access, and downloads for commuters, gym listeners, and anyone who relies on it as their main music app.

Playback fails first: a track stalls, a retry message appears, and the play button stops responding. Search and home recommendations can hang next, while your library and downloads may still open from cache. That split is common. Problems are often partial or regional, so one phone can fail while the web player works and a whole local network can lose the service at once; the status at the top tracks report volume against the usual level, and the site does not ping or probe the app.

Questions

YouTube Music FAQ

Is YouTube Music down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours, so you can see if other people are hitting the same wall. Rule out your own side with two checks. Load another site on the same device, then try the app on mobile data instead of Wi-Fi; if the trouble follows one network or one device, the fault is local, and if it shows up everywhere at once, it is not yours.

Why do my downloads say they are unavailable offline?

Offline playback needs an active Premium subscription, and the app has to reconnect now and then to renew the licence on each track. Skip that for long enough and saved songs stop playing even though the files still look present. Open the app on Wi-Fi, let the library refresh, and play one downloaded playlist to check; if a single album still fails, delete the download and save it again.

Why does playback stop when I lock my phone or switch apps?

Background play needs Premium in most regions, so music that cuts out when the screen locks usually means the subscription lapsed or you are signed into a different account than the one that pays. Check the account avatar in the app and compare it with the account you pay with. Ads on free accounts cause the same sudden stops.

Why do I get 'Something went wrong' or 'Video unavailable' in the app?

Those messages cover two different faults: a track pulled from your region's catalogue, or a cache and sign-in token that went stale. Force stop the app and clear its cache first, then sign out and back in. If the same track fails on the web player too, the song is likely gone from the service in your country, and reinstalling will not bring it back.

I paid for Premium but the app still shows ads. What now?

Payments can land on a different Google account than the one signed into the app, and that mix-up explains most of these cases; open the Play Store or App Store subscription list and check which account holds it. Then sign the app into that account. If the charge sits on the right account, sign out and back in and give it a few minutes to sync.

How we track YouTube Music

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for YouTube Music, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for YouTube Music, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. YouTube Music doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
