Why do I keep getting a communication error in the middle of a race?

Online races end with a communication error when your console drops its link for even a moment, and the game pulls you out of the lobby instead of letting you finish the lap. Two walls between you and the router make it likelier. Plug a LAN adapter into the dock, or move closer, and try the race again.

Does a Nintendo Switch Online membership decide whether I can race online?

It does. Online races, tournaments, Battle mode with other players, and friend rooms all need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership on the account tied to your console. Offline Grand Prix and Time Trials still work, and local wireless between consoles in the same room does not need it. Check your membership in your account settings first.

Why won't the game let me into a friend's room?

Friend rooms run on a code the host creates, and that code stops working once the host closes the room, which leaves you hanging on a loading screen with no way in. Ask the host to open a fresh room. If you join from your friend list instead, both of you need to be online at the same time and the host has to be sitting in the room.

Why do other karts jump around the track during a race?

When karts jump around the track or cross the finish line in an odd order, one player's connection is usually to blame. The person causing it often sees a smooth race on their own screen. If the same thing happens in every room you join, test your own router and Wi-Fi before you point at the service.
