How to fix Microsoft Entra not working

Microsoft Entra is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach microsoft.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Check the official status page for Entra

    Open the official status page at https://azure.status.microsoft/en-us/status and look for an active incident that affects sign-ins or token issuance. If Microsoft reports a broad outage, wait for the fix instead of changing tenant settings.

  2. Sign out of Entra and use a private window

    Sign out of every session, then open an InPrivate or Incognito window and sign in again. In Edge or Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+N. This clears stale cookies for the sign-in flow without touching tenant settings.

  3. Review Entra sign-in logs

    In the Entra admin center, go to Monitoring & health > Sign-in logs, then add a filter for the person's user principal name. Open the failed event and read the failure reason and the Conditional Access tab. That tells you if the block comes from a policy or an authentication method problem.

  4. Run Conditional Access What If

    From the Entra admin center, open Protection > Conditional Access > What If. Select the person, the cloud app that fails, the location, and the device platform, then run the report. If a policy shows as applied and blocking, check its assignments and exclusions before you change anything.

While Microsoft Entra is down: what to use instead

  • Local Windows account Sign in with a local account on your PC to reach the desktop and local files when your work login fails.
  • Cached Outlook profile If Outlook already downloaded your mail, switch to cached mode to read those messages, though new mail may not arrive until the service returns.

What happens when Microsoft Entra goes down

Microsoft Entra is Microsoft's cloud identity service, and it handles sign-in, multifactor authentication, conditional access and password reset for Microsoft 365 and third-party apps. When it falters, you lose access to mail, Teams, the Azure portal and any app that relies on its tokens.

Sign-in failures hit first: you may loop back to the login page, get a password prompt that will not complete, hit an MFA challenge that never finishes, or see a message that your account cannot be verified. Apps that already hold a valid token can keep working for a while, then token refresh fails and Outlook, Teams, the Azure portal and third-party SSO apps start asking you to sign in again. Admin work gets rough too: the admin center can stall on user searches and group edits. These problems are often partial and regional rather than total, so one tenant or one cloud instance can break while another stays fine; the official status page is the place to confirm a Microsoft-side event.

Is Microsoft Entra down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Microsoft Entra are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Microsoft publishes its own service health on the official status page, so check that before you change anything. If sign-in fails on one device but works on another network, the problem is likely local: try a different browser or a private window, and check that the device clock is correct.

Why does Microsoft Entra keep asking for MFA after I sign in?
Conditional Access policies decide when a sign-in needs a second factor, and a policy that covers all apps can trigger a prompt even after a recent login. Check the sign-in log for the policy name and result, then compare the device and network you used with the conditions in that policy. If the prompt only hits one app, its own authentication settings may be the cause.

What does AADSTS50011 mean when an app redirect fails?
That error means the redirect URI sent by the app does not match any URI registered on its app registration in Microsoft Entra. The app owner must add the exact URI, including the trailing slash and scheme. If you are the person signing in, send the full error text and the URL you landed on to your admin; changing your password will not help.

Why is my Windows device not showing as compliant in Entra?
Compliance status usually comes from Intune, so a device can sign in and still fail a Conditional Access rule that requires a compliant device. A stale check-in often leaves the status behind; open the Company Portal app and check for pending updates or a failed sync. Hybrid joined devices need the computer account to exist and stay enabled.

Why can't a guest user open a shared app after accepting the invite?
A guest account can accept the invite and still hit a Conditional Access policy that blocks external users or requires MFA from a network the guest cannot use. Ask the guest to open the app in a private window and check the sign-in log for the failure reason; the invite link can expire or point to the wrong tenant. If the app uses admin consent, a tenant admin must grant it before the guest can get in.
