Troubleshooting

How to fix Amazon Prime Video not working

Amazon Prime Video is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach primevideo.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Force stop Prime Video and reopen it

Fire TV has a Force Stop option under Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Prime Video; use it, then open the app again. On your phone, close it from the app switcher and reopen it.

  2. Sign out of Prime Video and sign back in

Open the profile icon in the app, go to Settings, and choose Sign out, then sign in again. Try the same title after your account reloads.

  3. Clear the Prime Video app cache

On Fire TV, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Prime Video > Clear Cache. On your Android phone, open Settings > Apps > Prime Video > Storage > Clear cache, then reopen the app. That clears cached data.

  4. Reinstall Prime Video

If the app still fails, uninstall it from the Fire TV menu: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Prime Video > Uninstall, then install it again from the Appstore. On your phone, remove the app from your home screen or app settings, then install it from the App Store or Google Play. It takes longer, but it replaces a bad install.

While Amazon Prime Video is down: what to use instead

  • Netflix If you already have Netflix, it gives you another app to open when the app you wanted will not load.
  • YouTube YouTube works for free clips and full videos when you want something to watch and do not need a specific title.
  • Prime Video website Open the service in a browser if the app crashes or stalls; the web player can get you back to the same library when the app is the problem.
  • Disney+ Disney+ helps if you already subscribe and want movies or series while the app is unavailable.

Problems at the same time as Amazon Prime Video

Since 27 October, all 5 of Amazon Prime Video's spikes in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

How many of Amazon Prime Video's spikes overlapped one of theirs.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Amazon Prime Video goes down

Amazon Prime Video is a streaming service for films, series, live events and rentals, and it has apps on Fire TV, smart TVs, phones and web browsers. Households use it for evening viewing and offline downloads, so an outage interrupts sign-in and playback and can leave a download stuck at the start.

Playback breaks first: a title or a live event shows a spinner or stops with an error message while the catalog still loads. Sign-in can fail on Fire TV or in a browser, and downloads may not start because the app cannot refresh your library. Some outages stay partial or regional. The status at the top shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours; the site does not ping, probe, poll or monitor Amazon Prime Video itself.

Questions

Amazon Prime Video FAQ

Is Amazon Prime Video down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. The site does not test the service itself. To tell if the problem is only on your side, try the same account on another device and network. If other apps work but playback still fails, restart the app and router; if it fails everywhere, the service is the likely cause.

Why does Prime Video say "Something went wrong" when I start a movie?

The app could not start playback, which can come from a weak connection or a title that is failing to load. Restart your device and try a different title. If the same title fails on another device, the problem is likely with that title or the account rather than your TV.

Why does Prime Video show "This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location"?

Content rights differ by country, so a title in your library at home may not be licensed where you are now. That points to licensing. If you are traveling, check the same title on another service or wait until you return, because your home region does not override local licensing. Try a title that is available where you are.

Why do my Prime Video downloads stop playing on my phone?

Downloads need a periodic license check, so a file can stop playing after the app has been offline for a while or after the title leaves the service. Play the title online once, then download it again. If storage is full, delete old downloads and retry.

Why does the Prime Video app keep asking me to sign in on my TV?

Repeated sign-in prompts often follow a password change or a device update that drops the login token. Sign out of the app, then sign in again with the same Amazon account. If that fails, remove and reinstall the app and check that the TV date and time are correct, because a wrong clock can break sign-in.

How we track Amazon Prime Video

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Amazon Prime Video, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Amazon Prime Video, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. Amazon Prime Video doesn't publish a public status page that we know of, so user reports are often the quickest sign that something is wrong on their side.
