How to fix Okta not working

Okta is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

  1. Try a private window

    Open a private or incognito window and go to your Okta sign-in page. Sign in again; if that works, a cookie or extension in your normal browser profile is causing the failure.

  2. Clear cookies for the Okta domain

    In your browser settings, find cookies and site data, then remove entries for your Okta domain and your organization's sign-in hostname. Close and reopen the browser, then sign in again.

  3. Sync your device clock

    On Windows, open Settings > Time & Language > Date & time and turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically. On macOS, open System Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set time and date automatically; TOTP codes fail when the clock drifts too far.

  4. Ask your admin to check your account

    If the error says you are not assigned to the application or your MFA factor is missing, your Okta admin can open Applications > Applications and check the app's Assignments. They can reset your factors from Directory > People.

What happens when Okta goes down

Okta is an identity provider that runs single sign-on and multi-factor authentication for workplaces. Companies rely on it so employees can reach email, chat, CRM, and internal tools without separate passwords, and an outage interrupts sign-ins across those apps.

When it breaks, sign-ins often stall first: you cannot reach the Okta dashboard, and apps that trust it for login bounce you back to a login page or show an access denied message. MFA push notifications fail. Admins may lose the admin console, which stops user creation and group changes while provisioning and deprovisioning lag behind. Is Okta down right now?
The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for the service are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. That reading comes from reports, not from any test this site runs. If reports look normal, check the official status page, then try a different network or browser and open another app that signs in through the same account. When the other app works, the trouble is likely local to your device or to the first app.

Why does Okta Verify keep sending push notifications that never arrive?
Push delivery depends on your phone's network and notification permissions, so check those first. If you have another factor enrolled, use that one to sign in and then set up the device again from your security settings. A missed push does not prove the service is down.

Why do I get 'You are not authorized to perform this operation' after signing in?
That message usually points to an access policy or group rule on your account. Your admin may need to add you to the right group or correct a rule, and signing out fully before trying again can clear a stale session. If coworkers on the same app hit the same wall, tell your admin the app name and the time it happened.

Why does my password reset email never arrive when I use the 'Forgot password' link?
Check the spam folder and any mail rules that might file messages from your company's identity provider. If your organization manages your account, the reset flow may be disabled and an admin has to start the reset for you. The mail can also take a few minutes when the sending service is busy.

Why do I keep getting bounced back to the Okta sign-in page when I open a work app?
A sign-in loop often means the app's single sign-on settings and your browser session disagree about who you are. Clear the site's cookies and close the browser, then sign in fresh. If the loop continues, your admin may need to check the app's SAML settings or your assigned groups. Trying the app in a private window or another browser can show whether the issue is local.
