How to fix Counter-Strike not working

Counter-Strike is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

1. Restart Steam and the game

   Close the game and Steam, then start both again. If the game stalls before the main menu, end any remaining Counter-Strike process in Task Manager and relaunch it from Steam.

2. Retry the server from console

   Open the console with the tilde key and type retry. If the console is disabled, turn on Enable Developer Console under Settings > Game before you join again.

3. Verify the game files

   In Steam, right-click Counter-Strike 2, open Properties, go to Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. The scan replaces damaged files and can fix launch crashes.

4. Clear launch options and cache

   Open Steam Settings > Downloads and click Clear Download Cache, then sign in again. If the game still fails after that, check Counter-Strike 2 Properties > General > Launch Options and remove any old commands, because stale flags can break launch after an update.
