Troubleshooting

How to fix Afrihost not working

Afrihost is up on our end, so if it won't work for you, the problem is most likely on your side. Work through these in order:

Your browser tries to reach afrihost.com over your own connection, right now. Nothing is sent to us or stored.

  1. Restart your Afrihost router and fibre box

Unplug the router's power, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. If you have a separate fibre box, power it down the same way and let the router reconnect.

  2. Check Afrihost's network status page

Open the official status page and read the top banner; it shows whether user problem reports are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. A normal reading does not clear your line, because the page never probes the service itself.

  3. Test a wired Afrihost connection

Plug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable, switch off Wi-Fi on that laptop, then load the same page or app. If the wired test works, the fault is in your Wi-Fi or device; if it fails, the problem is upstream or in the router.

  4. Run a traceroute to Afrihost

On Windows, open Command Prompt and run `tracert afrihost.com`; on macOS, open Terminal and run `traceroute afrihost.com`. Look for the first hop that times out on every run, since that points support to where the path breaks.

While Afrihost is down: what to use instead

  • Mobile data hotspot Tether from a phone on another network when the fibre line drops; email and urgent browsing keep moving without waiting on a repair.
  • Public Wi-Fi Public Wi-Fi at a café, library, or office gets you into the client area when your home line is the only thing that is out.
  • Gmail or Outlook Send urgent mail from Gmail or Outlook if the mailbox tied to the service will not load.
  • Cloudflare or Google DNS Switch your device to a public DNS resolver such as Cloudflare or Google when pages fail but the connection itself still works; that pattern points to a name lookup fault, not a dead line.
Same time

Problems at the same time as Afrihost

Since 28 October, Afrihost's only spike in problem reports overlapped a spike at another service.

When several services get problem reports at once, something they share, such as a cloud host or a network, can be the real cause. Matching times alone do not prove it.

A spike is a sharp rise in problem reports from users, as the live pages showed it. Times are Central European time.

About

What happens when Afrihost goes down

Afrihost is a South African internet provider selling fibre, mobile data, DSL, email and website hosting to homes and small businesses. When the network or a hosted service fails, your browsing, mail sync and hosted site stop together.

DNS lookups hang first. The router keeps its lights on while nothing resolves, streaming stalls, mail clients fail to send or receive, and a site or mailbox you host with the company stops answering from outside your network. Partial breaks are normal: mobile faults hit one tower or suburb and fibre faults follow a single exchange, so your neighbours on the same provider may drop while you stay online. The status at the top of each page here counts how many problem reports came in against the usual level, in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours, and it does not ping, probe or poll the service, so treat it as a sign of shared trouble rather than a test of your own line.

Questions

Afrihost FAQ

Is Afrihost down right now?

The status at the top of this page shows whether user problem reports for Afrihost are above their usual level, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. It does not ping or probe the service. Check the official status page for provider notices, then test the same connection on another device or switch to mobile data; if only one device fails, the problem is on your side.

Why does my Afrihost email keep asking for my password?

A saved password that no longer matches the mailbox is the usual cause. The mail app will keep prompting until you update it in the Client Zone, then re-enter the password on the phone or desktop client. If the prompt returns on every send, compare the outgoing server settings with the ones listed for that mailbox.

Why does my fibre line drop after load shedding?

Power cuts can leave the ONT and router out of sync even after mains power returns. Switch both off at the wall, wait for the ONT to finish its startup lights, then power the router; if the line still fails, log a fault in the Client Zone so the line provider can test the port.

Why is my Afrihost LTE router showing no service?

Check the SIM is seated and the router has signal bars before you touch any settings. A depleted data balance or a SIM that has not been activated will both leave you with no usable connection, so confirm the account state in the Client Zone. Move the router near a window and retry if it shows signal but no internet.

How do I fix a suspended Afrihost hosting account?

The Client Zone shows whether an unpaid invoice or a resource limit caused the suspension. Settle the invoice or raise a support ticket from the same area; reactivation usually follows once the account clears. Clear your browser cache and reload if the site still shows a default page.

How we track Afrihost

The status on this page comes from user-submitted problem reports for Afrihost, counted in 15-minute windows over the last 24 hours. Each window is compared with the normal level for Afrihost, so a few complaints on a quiet day don't trigger anything, but a sudden jump well above normal does.

When reports climb well above normal, the status here changes to partial outage or major outage and the chart moves with it. This is separate from Afrihost's official status page: user reports tend to show a problem early, while the official page confirms the cause. If the two disagree, check both.
