  1. Test the Switch before Smash online

    Open System Settings and run Test Connection from the Internet section. If that test fails, the console cannot reach Nintendo's servers, so fix the Wi-Fi or dock before you launch Smash.

  2. Restart Smash and the console

    Close Smash from the Home menu by pressing X on its icon, then choose Close. Hold the Power button for three seconds, then pick Restart from Power Options. A stuck matchmaking session can clear after this.

  3. Install pending Smash updates

    From the Home menu, press + on the Smash icon, choose Software Update, and then pick Via the Internet to install it. In System Settings, go to System and run System Update. An old version can block online play and matchmaking.

  4. Check your online membership for Smash

    Open your user page from the Home menu, then select Nintendo Switch Online to confirm your membership is active. If your plan lapsed, renew it and try Smash online again. Nintendo's official network status page can also show whether Nintendo's online services are down.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fighting game for Nintendo Switch, and its online modes connect you with players worldwide for quick matches and friend lobbies. An outage cuts off matchmaking and friend invites; local modes still work.

When Nintendo's online service has trouble, you may get a communication error before a match starts, or matchmaking can spin without finding an opponent. Battle Arenas and friend lobbies often fail next; you might see an empty room or a dropped invite. Why does online matchmaking in Elite Smash take so long?
Elite Smash only pulls from players near your Global Smash Power. That small pool makes waits longer. The game also factors in your region and connection quality, and it will reject matches that look unstable; if Quickplay finds games while Elite Smash does not, your rating may sit between active brackets, and the server can still be fine.

Why won't my replay upload to Shared Content?
Shared Content uploads go through Nintendo's servers, so a post can fail when the service is busy or your connection drops mid-upload. Try a different network and check for a game update. If the upload still fails, save the replay locally and post it later.

Why does the game say the server is under maintenance when I try to play online?
Nintendo sometimes takes its network down for scheduled maintenance. Online modes in this game will refuse connections until it ends. The message can also appear when your Switch has a bad DNS or router setting, even if other games work. Check Nintendo's official network status page first; if it shows no maintenance, restart your router and try a phone hotspot to rule out your home network.
